Why Did I Do This?
\nWhen I was scheduled to go into the Missionary Training Center on June 29, 1994, I had to fly out of Florida and leave my family a few days early, and then stay a couple days with my sister Jenna LaRose. While at her home, she spent time giving me advice on how to be a good missionary. One thing she showed me and gave me was a key list of scriptures that she turned to often during her mission in the London England South Mission. When she gave me those scriptures, I felt that I needed to study them and get to know them well because I assumed I would use them a lot during my mission to Ecuador.
\nIn 1995, when I was in the middle of serving my Mission in Quito, Ecuador, I had a meeting with my Mission President Albert Farnsworth. I had asked him a question, and I noticed that he looked at a black book that he had. When I glanced at it, I saw that he had an alphabetized listing of different topics with scriptures underneath them. I asked him what it was, and he told me that when he was a missionary he would take scriptures that meant something to him when he read them, and he would compile them into different categories. In a way, he was creating his own topical guide.
\nI decided that day that I would do the same. I thought it would be neat to have a group of quotes not only from the scriptures, but from good books I read, so that I could refer to them whenever I needed. I have used these quotes in many talks and on the spot discussions I have had. They have helped me quite a bit, and I have always wanted to have easy access to them. This is why I have launched this website, and along with it a mobile version for my phone.
\nI also feel that I come from a family of “collectors”. My grandfather Leroy Nielson had many collections, but the one I remember most was his incredible rock collection. They were shiny, some cracked open that looked like diamonds, and others that were huge round boulders. I remember he was always “busy” tinkering around with his collection. My brother Leroy also has this same trait, and has a massive collection of books in his basement. Of course, he has turned his desire to collect into a monetary opportunity and sells the books when he can.
\nI guess this is my “collection” that satisfies that inherent itch in my family! I enjoy reading good things, and saving the words that had the most impact on me at that time.

\nInsert by Edith Brown: James Brown was the step brother of Andrew Brown. Both are Christian Christensen Brown’s sons. We are from the first wife, Dorthea’s son, Andrew, and James is from the third wife.Christian Christensen came from Denmark to the USA sometime before 1866. He came in the company of a Mr. Brown who sponsored his passage. When he arrived in New York he took the name of BROWN, and from then on was known as Christian Christensen Brown.CC Brown worked in NYC until he saved enough to send for his wife and 2 children. Their plan was to meet in New York and travel together with the Saints to Utah. His wife Dorthea had the ill-fated luck of being on the emigrant ship the CAVOUR. The ship journey took 61 days! It landed in NYC on July 31 1866. Because of such a long delay, CC Brown did not meet his wife when she arrived. Unkind dock workers that had been paid by CC Brown did not notify him of the arrival, and in fact, they told Dorthea that her husband didn’t want any thing to do with her or the church. Dorthea was left with no option but to travel on with the saints.
As soon as CC Brown found out that the company had left, he bought a horse and tried to catch them. Dorthea finally succumbed to cholera after the company was traveling across the plains, being one of the 17 listed as died on the trail.
\nFamily legend says that CC Brown did catch the company in time to find his wife in a hut along the side of the road, and was able to say goodbye to her just before she expired.
\nCC Brown’s boy Andrew did grow up and have progeny(one of which is Ross Brown, now serving at Cove Fort on a Mission)
\nThe little girl did die young and family legend says that she appeared to the Brown sisters in the Monroe home one night.
CC Brown did remarry Hannah Nielsen and settled in Monroe, Utah. They were the parents of Dora, Magdaline, Kistie, Manila, Hans, Chris, James.
\nJames Brown was the only one to carry on the Brown name as his brothers died young. He married Annie Magleby and had five girls, Naoma Rydman, Beth Thueson, Faye Peterson, Janis Nilsson, and Anne Arthur.

\n“It was the first part of September 1975, and dad was working in the basement of the house we were building. The house had the sub flooring, walls framed in and the roof. There were no doors or windows, just the openings. The family was living in a 15 foot trailer in the back yard. I was preparing for a Tupperware home party. Clint’s older sisters had taken him into the new house to play. He had been walking a short time. The girls saw their neighbor friends playing in their backyard, so they easily jumped the fireplace opening to wave at their friends.
\nClint was 11 months old and followed his sisters not realizing there was a hole in the floor. He fell eight feet down to the basement and landed on his head. Ross heard the thud and ran to pick him up. We madly made arrangements for the other children, called the doctor, who told us to meet him in the emergency room. Clint did not cry, just whimpered and moaned. After the doctor looked at the protruding bump on his forehead, he told us to take Clint to the University of Utah hospital, where the doctors were waiting for him. They took x-rays and immediately asked us for permission to do a spinal tap on him. It was confirmed that he broke his nose and had a hairline fracture in his forehead where the bacteria entered the spinal column. They put him on an IV with medicine for spinal meningitis. In those days, parents did not stay with their children in the hospital, nor were children under the age of twelve allowed to visit. We were told that he had a very scary night because of the swelling. Grandpa Nielson and Ross gave him a blessing before we left the hospital that night. The treatment was 10 days on the medication and then 24 hours off before he could be released from the hospital. Unfortunately, after those 24 hours, he still had spinal meningitis. So he began round 2 of the 10-day IV medication. During the second week, he had his first birthday on September 18th in the hospital.
\nThe following Sunday after Clint’s fall was Stake Conference in my parents’ stake. My parent’s had a temple recommend interview and told the Stake President what had happened to Clint.
\nDuring the morning session, the Stake President asked the members to fast for the infant son of Ross and Edith Brown.
\nI know that the power of the fast from so many faithful members saved and healed our son. Even though he had to stay in the hospital for a month, he had no lasting or permanent effects from his accident. The doctors were concerned that there would be brain damage and wanted to see him in three months, then in six months and then every year. After two years, they determined that Clint was fine and there only concern was that his reading and learning would be affected. \nJenna LaRose (Brown), Clinton’s Older Sister, recollection of that day, ”I don’t’ remember being in charge of you. I don’t remember you following us over the hole. I DO remember jumping over the hole (not necessarily that day). I DO remember being in the driveway talking to Tiffiny over the fence when mom and Grandma Orpha Brown started running around like crazy. Mom and Dad jumped into the car with you shouting instructions to Grandma Brown about taking care of the rest of the kids and then they sped off. When I realized you got hurt I started crying a lot and we said a prayer for you. I DO remember going to visit you at the hospital and not being allowed to go inside. So they held you up to the window on the 2nd or 3rd floor so you could wave to us and we could wave back. I DO remember when I could go into the hospital to see you that I was weirded out by the tubes in your head.”
\n“Elder Clinton R. Brown has been preserved through several accidents as a young child, and we, as his parents knew, that he had a special mission to perform in this life. He has always looked after and protected younger or picked on children, and has always had a lot of compassion for family and friends. Two weeks before his first birthday, he was being tended by his older sisters on the first floor of our home that was unders construction. He fell through the opening for the future fireplace and landed on his head in the basement concrete eight feet below. He spent the night in the hospital under constant watch because he was so lethargic. Before morning, his temperature was very high and a spinal tap was done on him. As the doctors suspected, he had contracted spinal meningitis through either his fractured skull or the break in his nose, which were the result of the fall. He was immediately put on the proper medicine through IV and remained in the hospital for the next ten days. Sometimes he needed to be tied down because he would keep pulling the IV out. After ten days, he was taken off the IV and observed for 24 hours. Within 12 hours, his temperature was very high again. Another spinal tap was taken which indicated he still had spinal meningitis. He was again hooked up to the IV and medication for another ten days. He celebrated his first birthday in the hospital. He was finally released from the hospital after a month, was under doctor’s care and watch for any brain damage as a result of the meningitis. A year later, he was released by the doctors with a clean bill of health. We saw the power of fasting and prayer and especially when this is done in numbers. My parents’ stake, of which we were not a part, fasted for the grandson of one of their members. \nwritten when I was 16 years old.
\nI was born in the year 1946, on April 18, at Rupert, Minidoka County, Idaho. I lived in Burley, Cassia County, Idaho with my parents until I was about six weeks old. We then moved to Salt Lake City to live with my father’s mother. We lived with her from May until September. I was blessed June 2, of the same year by my Grandfather, Patriarch Moroni Lazenby at Manti, Sanpete County, Utah. In September, we moved to Union, (East Midvale) Utah.
\nWhen I was four years old, my father was in the National Guard, and during the Korean conflict, his group was called into active duty at Fort Lewis, Washington. My mother, sister, Elva, who was born January 17, 1949, and I moved there to be with him. We were in Washington one year. During that time we went to Seattle to see the first and second loads of Korean war veterans returning from active duty. We went to the ocean several times and also during that time, we saw a lot of beautiful country. While there, my brother, Clifford Lee was born on September 15, 1951 and Dad was released on October 10, 1951.
\nI started kindergarten at Union Elementary school in the summer of 1952. My teacher’s name was Mrs. Quinn. That fall, I went to first grade at Sandy Elementary School and my teacher’s name was Miss Adams. This was the first year the new addition to the school was used. I continued going to Sandy up to the fifth grade. My teachers were: 2nd – Mrs. Swenson; 3rd – Mrs. Sheattler; 4th – Miss Irving; 5th – Mrs. Sanchez and Mr. Middaugh. Mrs. Sanchez quit teaching around Christmas time. In the sixth grade, I went to the new Midvalley Elementary School, which had just been built that year. My teacher was Miss Johansen. The next three years I went to Mount Jordan Junior High School. In the year 1961, I started the tenth grade at Jordan High School. a school that is fifty years old. Jordan High took state in basketball the year that I was in tenth grade. I attended the new Hillcrest High School during my eleventh and twelfth years of school. It was completed in 1962 and is a beautiful, modern school, which was in walking distance from our home.
\nThe summer of 1953, I broke my right wrist when the chain broke on our neighbor’s swing in which I was swinging. I had a cast on for six weeks.
\nI was three years old when the television was invented by Philo Farnsworth. We got our first television for Christmas the year of 1954.
\nMaxine was born on July 23, 1954 and Shirley on June 19, 1959.
\nI was baptized on May 2, 1954 by my father and confirmed on May 3, 1954 by my Dad in the Union Second ward, East Jordan Stake.
\nOn our vacation in 1957, we went back to Washington to see the sights and my cousin Amy Beck and family. We went through Idaho, Oregon, and Washington on this trip. I enjoyed this trip very much. We went to see Grand Coulee Dam, also the Snake River and many other interesting things.
\nOn our vacation in 1958, my family and I went to Roosevelt for a couple of days to see my father’s sister. During our stay there, it was Maxine’s third birthday and Aunt Thora took us to a rodeo, which was the first rodeo that I ever saw. When we left there, we started for Wayne County and on the way there, we went to Green River. As we were approaching the Capitol Reef National Monument, it started to rain. When we were about a mile inside Capitol Reef, we met a flash flood head on. Luckily, we came to a rise in the road, so we never got wet from the flood. We were trapped in there for three hours, with water on three sides of us and the other side was a steep mountain. It had stopped raining and we were waiting for the water to go down when it started raining again. So we just went through the water, which was still up to the running boards of our ’55 truck and drove straight home, without finishing our planned trip.
\nIn the summer of 1958 and 1959, I went to Brighton MIA Girls Camp for three days each time. I really had a lot of fun both years. In 1959, my cousin, Beverly Jensen was my counselor up there, which made it especially fun.
\nI graduated from Primary on May 25, 1958, and we were presented our certificates in Sacrament Meeting, in which we sang a song entitled, “We Are Leaving Primary.”
\nThe summer of 1959, I taught the Nursery group in Primary with my girlfriend, Linda Coulter. I enjoyed doing this and it gave me a very good experience. I gave it up when school started again.
\nIn 1960, we went to the four corners, which is the only place in the United States where four corners of states meet. They are the corners of New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado and Utah. I managed to be in all four states at the same time. We then went to the Mesa Verde in Colorado, which is some cliff dwellings of ancient Indians. We also saw the Arches National Monument. I really enjoyed this trip, especially the beautiful Mesa Verde.
\nIn March of 1960, we got our new Chevrolet station wagon. It arrived on the 24th (Dad’s birthday) and is a 1960 make and of copper color. In April of 1962, we got our new Chevrolet panel truck. It arrived on the 10th (Mama’s birthday) and is a turquoise color and a 1962 model. We sold our green Chevrolet ’55 truck to Uncle Leland in February of 1962.
\nOn November 27, 1960, I gave a talk in Sacrament Meeting for the first time. I was 14 years old. The talk I gave is found in the “Sacred to Me” section of my Treasures of Truth book. I was really scared, but I know it benefitted me, so that I’ll be able to give better talks in the future.
\nI got my first individual award on September 11, 1959, which was presented to me in Sacrament Meeting. I got my second award in September of 1960 and it was presented to me at a youth banquet which was held especially for giving out the awards. I received my 3rd award on November 12, 1961 and it was also presented to me in Sacrament Meeting.
\nWhen I was in the sixth grade, I was chosen with four other students to be editor of the school paper. We put out four papers throughout the year, in which I wrote one of the editorials. This was very interesting work and I enjoyed it.
\nIn the summer of 1961, I went to Woodland MIA summer camp, with our stake. I had a lot of fun like everyone else did. Linda Butterfield and I were the ward paper reports on what happened at Woodland. On the third day that we were up there, everyone was all packed and waiting for the truck to come and take us home. All at once, it seemed anyway, a forest fire broke out with leaping flames coming towards us. We all ran to camp and carried all the equipment and put it into the back of a camper and tried to get out of the area. As we were just leaving, the truck came and the flames became under control.
\nIn the summer of 1961, I was in the Days of ’47 Pageant, “Valiantly Onward.” I was a choral reader and the pageant starred Loraine Day. It was under the direction of Glen E. Sacos. We performed it on July 24 and 25.
\nOn April 8, 1961, my German class went down to the B.Y.U. for the FESTIVAL OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES. We were gone the whole day and saw exhibits from the different countries and movies from the countries. We all took a test and I rated very good, which was the highest from our school. The ratings were superior – excellent – very good and good.
\nWhen I was in the ninth grade, the swimming pool at Mount Jordan was completed, so we had classes in swimming. At the end of our course, each girl had to pass a test and in so doing, received a little card and a Red Cross pin saying we passed the Red Cross swimming course. I passed the intermediate swimming course.
\nAt my promotional exercises from the ninth grade, I was on the honor roll. I was privileged enough to be able to give the closing prayer at the promotional ceremony.
\nIn 1961, our family went to see Dinosaur Land, which is in Vernal, Utah. This is very interesting to see these prehistoric animals.
\nThe winters of 1961 and 1962, I was in the floor show of the ‘Gold and Green Balls of our stake. Mrs. George Apostle taught us the dances. I really enjoyed being in these dances.
\nI have really enjoyed my mutual teachers, especially my second year Beehive and My Mia Maid teacher. They are: 1st year Beehive teacher – Mrs. Ethyl Wilson; 2nd year Beehive teacher – Mrs. Madonna Biesinger and Mrs. Rose Tapp. My Mia Maid teacher was Mrs. Betsy Meidlinger. We have had some really fun times together.
\nThe girls in our ward played volleyball during the winter of 1961-62. Then in the summer of 1962, we played soft ball. We were under the leadership of Betty Newbold, our sports director. We all really had fun and enjoyed being under leadership.
\nI was in tenth grade when the first manned satellites were orbited.
\nThe day school let out in 1962, I was playing baseball with the neighborhood kids. I ran up to catch a ball and it hit the end of my middle finger and broke it. I wore a splint for three days.
\nWe went through Capitol Reef National Monument again in 1962. But we picked a day when there were no clouds in the sky. We found the exact spot where we were trapped and piled up some rocks there.
\nOur vacation in 1962 was to Yellowstone National Park. We left on July 2, a Monday and got there at 4:00 pm that same day. We saw about seventeen bears and two deer. The family camped two nights in Yellowstone, one night in West Yellowstone and the next at Lewis Lake.
\nWe saw all the sights, but those that impressed me were Old Faithful, and the earthquake area. They have left the area just as it was after the earthquake of 1959, so the people may see it. It must have been very terrifying that night. Our whole family was thrilled and excited to see so many bears come out onto the roads. We came out of Yellowstone through the Grand Tetons. They are really beautiful and we had lunch in one of the Parks, Jenny Park in the Tetons. On the fourth of July, we were traveling home and we noticed that there was a rodeo in Afton, Wyoming that night, so we got a motel, cleaned ourselves up and enjoyed the rodeo. On July 7, Mama and Dad left me in Lapoint, Utah to stay with my girlfriend, Eileen Woolley, and they left Elva in Myton, Utah with my Aunt Thora. Elva and I stayed there until July 18, when we rode the bus to Salt Lake City. We got home at 2:00 am.
\nIn January of 1962, I was asked to teach the Moonbeams in Primary. I enjoyed and loved this work very much. I quit this when school started in August of 1962 because they changed out meetings all to the same night and I would be able to handle Primary, homework and Mutual all on the same day.
\nOn Wednesday, August 1, 1962, I went water skiing for the first time. I fell over four times and was on the skis twice. A boy, Jimmie Hepner, who lived in our ward, invited me to go with him and his uncle.
\nMom and Dad let me start dating a little bit in the year 1962, when I was 16. All of the fellows who asked me were boys that both Mom and Dad knew or else knew their parents quite well.
\nI felt my first earthquake on September 5, 1962 while I was in first period at Hillcrest High School. I was quite concerned, especially when our teacher ran out of the room and did not say anything to us.
\nI was in the dance festival of June Conference in 1963. I was in the floorshow number which was called “Tropical Splendor.”
\nI got my first job at the Midvale County Library. I started training on August 19, 1963 for 90 cents an hour. At the end of May, I got a raise to $1.40 an hour and put on full time for the summer. I quit my job on September 15, because of college.
\nI graduated from Hillcrest High School on May 27, 1964 and it was a beautiful program.
\nOn June 30, 1964, I was at a party and jumping on a trampoline. I twisted my ankle and broke it. I had a cast on for five weeks.
\nI received a scholarship to Dixie College (2 year college) and was on the honor roll of the graduating class.

\nI was born April 10,1920, on a ranch just south of Aurora, Sevier County, Utah. My parents are Moroni and Rosa May Stewart Lazenby. We moved into the town of Aurora and here I attended school to the 6th grade. We walked a mile to school, church, store and etc. We worked in the sugar beets and hay fields, milked cows and other necessary chores on a farm. At noon and after work, we would go swimming in the canal to cool off. There were trees which shaded this spot.
\nI was raised in an active LDS family. My dad held many positions including stake president and then patriarch. My mother also held many positions in the church. At one time, she held eight positions at the same time. There were many faith promoting experiences in our home with so many people having faith in Dad.
\nI remember the log house we lived in caught fire and the bucket brigade of men and women from the canal to the house. Also, at five, I had my tonsils out and remember sitting in Mom and Dad’s big bed in this log house, eating soda crackers and how excited my mother got when she saw me.
\nWe moved into a new home and I remember a wood stove in the front room. I was laying behind this stove when I felt my first earthquake and was afraid the stove would fall on me.
\nI never really cared about camping and I don’t know why because I never camped much as a child. I do remember going camping with my brother Leland and his family. We came up to a sawmill and noticed a small boy had been killed. I remember being so sick all night.
\nI attended junior high and first year of high school at Salina which is five miles north of Aurora. We moved to Manti, Sanpete County, Utah where I finished seminary and high school.
\nOne of the highlights in Manti was helping at the county fair. I helped decorate the building that held the entries. Then I helped enter and arrange these entries.
\nAfter graduating from school, I came to Salt Lake City to work. I worked in homes, restaurants and clerking in stores. I also worked at a club which was exclusively for ladies and then the Remington Arms plant during the war. I had two special friends, June Draper, who is still a special friend and Smokey Packer.
\nIn June 1941, I met LeRoy Nielson at a dance at Coconut Grove the night before he was drafted in the World War II. We dated two more times and then he left for California. I have always felt the Lord had a big hand in bringing us together as he was working in the State of Washington at the time he was drafted. In December 1941, Roy came home on a furlough and asked me to marry him. We had heard about noon that Pearl Harbor had been bombed, so plans couldn’t be made.
\nIn May 1942, I went to California and we were engaged. On July 16, 1942, we went to Evanston, Wyoming and were married by Judge Ruel Walton. We came home on the bus and as I hadn’t gotten anyone to take my place at Remington Arms, I had to go to work until eleven o’clock. He stayed for two days and then went back to California. Two weeks later, I quit my job and went to California to join him. We lived in Chico, California and I worked in an almond orchard. Our landlords were special people, Alfred and Della Evans. We lived in Boise, Idaho; Pendleton, Oregon; and Stockton, California, then to St. Louis, Missouri. Then after we had been married nine months, he was sent overseas in the Pacific area. He was an electrician for the B-24 bombers. I worked in Salt Lake and Manti while he was gone. I served a six-month stake mission in the South Sanpete Stake.
\nRoy returned home on July 15, 1945. We were sealed in the Manti Temple on July 19, 1945. My father was the night guard at the temple and the night we were sealed, my father was sic and Roy guarded the temple all night.
\nWe moved to Burley, Idaho and our first child was born in Rupert, Idaho, on April 18, 1946. We named her Edith. In June of 1946, we moved back to Salt Lake and lived with Roy’s mother and then moved to Midvale at our present address.
\nI worked in Relief Society as a visiting teacher and I gave a lesson on workday. This one lesson I gave, I told about the new type of cloth material that would be coming in the future. This was the type of cloth that wouldn’t need ironing. It seemed very amusing at the time.
\nOur second daughter, Elva Jean, was born on January 17, 1949 at Murray, Utah.
\nI worked a short time in the stake genealogy. I sold the Children’s Friend magazine and the Relief Society Magazine in the ward. I also taught junior Sunday school, ward primary and stake primary. I was the LDS garment representative in our ward. We’ve been in the Union 2nd, 3rd, and 7thwards. In the 3rd ward, I was a 1st and 2nd counselor in the primary.
\nIn 1950, the National Guard unit that Roy belonged to was activated (Korean War) and he was sent to Fort Lewis, Washington. My brother, Arthur, was the colonel of the outfit but was killed August 1, 1950 in a plane crash near Tabiona, Utah.
\nWe lived in Parkland, Washington and then at Fort Lewis. Our third child and first boy was born at Madigan Hospital on September 15, 1951. We named him Clifford Lee. In October of 1951, we came back to our home in Union (Midvale).
\nWhile in Washington, we drove to Seattle and saw the first two boats of soldiers come in from Korea. The planes and boats put on quite a show.
\nOur daughter, Maxine, was born on July 23, 1954 at Murray, Utah and Shirley was born in Salt Lake City on June 19, 1959. I was the ward Relief Society Visiting Teacher Supervisor for ten years and gave the visiting teacher message for about three years and have given the Social Relations Lesson for the past two and a half years.
\nIn 1964 our family made the trip to Philmont, New Mexico to the Scout Training Ranch. Very interesting trip.
\nWe are pleased with the partners our children have chosen. All of them so far have married in the Temple. It was a thrill in November of 1975 when Maxine got married to have four of our children in the temple with their partners.
\nEdith married Ross Clyde Brown in the Salt Lake Temple on January 5, 1968. They have five children: Mishaun Leigh; Jenna Sue; LeRoy Scott; Clinton Ross and Meredith Jane. Roy and I enjoyed the friendship of Ross’ parents, especially going to basketball games together.
\nElva Jean married Jerry Delos Jackson in the Salt Lake Temple on February 26, 1971. Jerry’s aunt passed away in the temple just before the ceremony. I remember Jerry’s grandfather slightly and remember his great grandmother. His parents were friends with my parents as they all came from Wayne County.
\nThe story is told that the night I was born, the doctor had to choose whether to come to mother who was giving birth or to Jerry’s sick grandmother. He chose my mother and Mrs. Durfee died.
\nCliff went on a mission to Japan in 1972. Ten months after he arrived home, he married Sallie Jo Ferrell of Seattle, Washington in the Salt Lake Temple on April 18, 1975. I was impressed to find out the night of the reception that when Sallie became interested in Cliff, her father called long distance from Seattle and talked with our former Bishop, Lee Ashton, to inquire into Cliff’s background and all about him. Cliff graduated from the B.Y.U. in 1976. They have a little girl, Jennifer Marie. They have been transferred to Portland, Oregon.
\nMaxine married Douglas C. Pearce in the Salt Lake Temple On November 20, 1975. He is from Midvbale. She is working and Doug is finishing college. He’ll graduate as a mining engineer.
\nShirley is a senior at Hillcrest High School. She wants to be an interior decorator.
\nRoy is still a great inspiration to me and our family and I love him dearly. He has been a dedicated Scouter for thirty years and has received many awards including the Silver Beaver. He had a special sacrament meeting dedicated to him for his scouting service. A tape was sent from Japan from Cliff to Roy to honor him.
\nOne of the thrills of my life was when Roy was a veil worker in the Temple and I was lucky to go thru the veil where he worked.
\nI heard recently of a faith promoting incident in my Dad’s life. He was herding sheep on Packer Mountain in Wayne County. As he went to check on his sheep, he fell in the fire and was burned except where his garments covered his body. The other men there named the peak after him. It has a sign that says “Moroni’s Peak.”

Ellen Amelia Johnson Lisonbee, daughter of Lorenzo and Mary Lyman Johnson, born December 12, 1847 at Winter Quarters, Nebraska. She was the seventh child of a family of eight children. Her parents remained in Winter Quarters with the saints who dropped out of the company of saints that came to Utah in 1847.
\nShe came to Utah with her parents in 1852. They settled in Springville. The opportunity for education was very limited but she was very studious and applied herself so was able to assist in teaching school at an early age.
\nShe was married to James Thompson Lisonbee on the 20th of April, 1861. The first ten years of their married life was spent in Springville where their first four children were born. In 1871 they moved with their family, two sons and two daughters, to Monroe, Sevier County, Utah. There they lived in the Fort that had been built to protect the white people from the Indians.
\nShe taught the first school in the Fort and was active in all the affairs of the community. They moved from there to Annabella in the Spring of 1873, living in a dugout while the land was being cleared of sagebrush preparatory for planting their crops. On the 25th of August their third daughter was born. At this time she lived in a little log room without windows, door, or floor. I can remember seeing her wetting the floor around the stove and patting it down with a cloth to keep the dust down.
\nIn 1874 our father was called back to Monroe to act as bishop and president of the United Order, which office he held until his death in 1877. He was set apart by the President of Sevier Stake, Joseph A. Young.
\nOn the 22nd of May, 1875, another daughter came to cheer and bless their home and was the fourth daughter and the sixth child.
\nAt the general conference in April, 1876, our father was called to fill a mission to the Southern States and left the following May for his field of labor. Our mother had endured many hardships of pioneer life up to this time, and now she was left with the responsibility of making a living for a family of six children. Her cheerful and uncomplaining nature proved a great help to her in enduring this burden.
\nAfter our father left for his mission she rented her home to the telegraph operator’s family for the summer. The office was in her home and had been for some time. She took her family and went to Springville where there were better opportunities to get work. She and her sister, Harriett, who also had the responsibility of a family, rented an orchard. They took care of the fruit by drying most of it which consisted of apples, peaches, and plums. They had to build the scaffolds to dry the fruit and carry all the fruit from the orchard to the house. In the fall they sold the dried fruit to the merchants for merchandise. The spare time they had after taking care of the fruit, they sewed and did any other work they could get.
\nThat fall or early Winter she returned home.
\nOur father’s health failed so with the hardships of his mission that he was released in the Spring, but not being able to get the money for his fare home, he remained in the mission field until early winter. On the 28th of Nov., 1877, he arrived in Springville. Two days after arriving there he took sick with pneumonia and died on the 9th of Dec., 1877. He was buried in Springville on the 12th, the day our mother was thirty years old.
\nIt was in sorrow and disappointment that she returned home to resume the task of taking care of her family. She had taken them all with her which she was always very thankful for. Traveling with horses and wagon, and it being just before Christmas, made the trip very unpleasant. She traveled in company with a man from Monroe by the name of Richard Loynd who had hauled freight for the stores from Salt Lake City. One night we camped in York, a little railroad terminal. Only Eastern people lived there. It was just night when we arrived, and Mr. Loynd went to every house in York and tried to get a place for us to get in out of the weather as it had already started to storm but of no avail. Our mother then made a bed on the ground for the four oldest children. She and her mother wrapped themselves as comfortably as they could and held the two youngest children all night in the front end of the wagon. When morning came there was only a mound of snow to be seen where the bed was made. Our mother’s mother was left a widow five years before so she was taking her home with her, glad of the opportunity to do so.
\nShe was always a great comfort in the home. She had a very pleasant and cheerful personality. She was not only a comfort to have in the home, but she was always busy doing the family knitting, darning and mending, which, of course, was a great help when our mother had to be so busy all the time earning a living for her family.
\nOur home was her home for twenty-six years when she passed away at the age of 92. Sometimes she would have our father’s mother with her to. [sic]. Our father’s mother being blind made the task harder.
\nOur clothing for the trip to meet our father was made of homemade linsie, with the help of her sister, Harriet, they spun, wove, and sewed suits, dresses, and underwear. Her responsibility of making a living necessitated her doing any kind of work she could get to do but her main pursuit was sewing. She did all kinds of family sewing. She would go out and sew by the day for 50 cents. For her sewing she would take foodstuff or whatever she could use for her family. She washed and sometimes ironed. For this she would get $1.00 and $1.25 when she took them home.
\nWith the kind cooperation of the manager of the Co-op store, she was given the work of making men’s jumpers, and overalls, for the store. Handling this heavy material made the work very strenuous. And later when the Nielssenn [sic] Brothers’ started in the mercantile business, in addition to jumpers and overalls, she made shirts, and underwear. She would carry home bolts of shirting, cotton flannel, and denims and made these articles by the dozens.
\nThough she faced many discouraging situations, with her sincere faith and courage which comes from a knowledge of the gospel, gave her courage and determination to carry on in a spiritual, as well as temporal things.
\nShe took pride in attending Sunday School with her family regularly every Sunday morning. She was secretary and taught a class for many years in Sunday School. She was always ready and willing to help take care of the sick. She would wash and lay out the dead bodies and make clothing for them, and all free gratis, which was the custom then.
\nOne Fall she left the older children at home and went to Springville to get work. She helped to gather the Fall crop of fruit. With these earnings she bought material for the family clothing before coming home. After reaching home she received notice of an allotment for $25.00 on the Manti Temple. She called her four daughters to her and asked them how they felt about giving their new dresses on the allotment. They were happy for the privilege. She helped pay her allotment in that way. The workman taking in exchange for their labor.
\nShe taught school for awhile, using her home for a school room. About 1880 our schools became more permanent. She took the school teachers to board.
\nIn about 1884 or 1885, her youngest son felt like he would like to stay at home and farm if he had more land and perhaps arrange so his mother wouldn’t have to work so hard, so she traded her home in town and her 20 acres of farm land for more land a home on the farm, but when they did this, they didn’t have animals or machinery to handle it with so this necessitated mother going to town, a distance of about four miles, this distance she walked many, any times. She would sew all day for the meager sum of 50 cents and walk home.
\nWhile living on the farm she took an invalid lady and her little girl to take care of. This was a hard task as the woman was helpless with rheumatism.
\nShe also took a family of motherless children to care for.
\nA portion of theses earnings was used to get something permanent on the farm but had to contend with adversity and losses in various ways.
\nShe bought ducks, turkeys, and chickens, hoping to get something started on the farm that would bring revenue, but the canal run through the farm and the ducks would get in it and stray away or something happened to them. They were soon all lost. The coyotes would get the turkeys and so their hard earnings would be a loss.
\nNot long after, she moved back to town and still continued to sew for a living. She only lived to the age of 56 passing away on the 25th of December, 1903, at Monroe, Utah.

James Thompson Lisonbee, son of Coker Lisonbee and Mary Calaham. Born at Pickins [sic] County, Alabama Nov. 15, 1839. Came to Utah in 1854 and located in Springville where he was baptized August 27, of the same year by James R. Ivie. He was ordained a member of the 51st quorum of the seventies May 25, 1857. He was married to Ellen Amelia Johnson in 1861 of Springville. He was called to go to the Missouri river as teamster to bring emigration the following year 1862. He volunteered to go again for the same purpose. In 1865 he went to Sevier and Sanpete Counties to help protect the people from the Indians, and was an officer in the Black Hawk Indian war. In 1870 he was one of the workmen on the Provo woolen mill building. In the spring of 1871 he moved to Monroe. There he labored diligently in the interest of the new settlement. He spent much time clearing and breaking up farm land.
\nHe moved to Annabelle in the spring of 1873 and filed on new land. He lived in a dugout for sometime, later building a log room, where he lived until late in the fall without floor, door, or window.
\nIn 1874 he was called to go back to Monroe, where he was ordained Bishop of Monroe by Joseph A. Young the President of Sevier Stake. He was also appointed President of the United Order.
\nAt April Conference in 1876 he was called on a Mission to preach the Gospel, and in obedience to the call started for the Southern States May 30, of the same year. He left Mother with six of us children to care for. He spent 18 months in the mission field and was released on account of poor health. He was so anxious to stay and fill his mission, that he stayed there six months after he received his honorable release.
\nHe suffered many hardships traveling without money/ Many times he was notified by a mob to leave a certain district. His diligent labors resulted in about 30 members being added to the Church.
\nHe arrived in Springville November 28, 1877, where he met his wife and children. He took sick with pneumonia on the first of Dec. And died on the 9th, in hiss 38th year. He was buried in Springville.
\nElder John Morgan was one of his missionary companions and he said that “He was one of the most spiritual minded men he ever knew.”

He contracted an antibiotic resistant staff infection that he is still fighting. After two more surgeries to clean out the infection, they told us they wanted to go in again. We could not think of going through another surgery without a sense of dread. Would they want to go in again after that? The medications they had him on caused his bowels to stop working …which was causing him more pain. After about 45 days of this he said to a friend, Josh who was visiting… “I?m so tired and in so much pain I just want it to be over one way or the other.” It was the kind of comment one makes out of desperation.
\nJosh and John had served together in the Elders Quorum presidency. The fact that Josh has Cerebral Palsy and is confined to a wheelchair and communicates with difficulty has never stopped Josh from accepting callings or using his priesthood.
\nAs Josh was visiting that day, John was telling him about the pain he was having. Josh had felt that same kind of pain before and knew exactly what it was like. Josh said he needed John to stay around.
\nThen next morning John was feeling much better…like night and day better.. and the pain was gone. That afternoon I got a call from Josh?s Mom. She told me Josh was in the hospital with a bowel obstruction. She also told me that Josh was happy and a little surprised, because he knew that the Lord had answered his prayer to let him take the pain from John…at least for awhile.
\nI know the Lord loves and cares for us.. He is very near to us when we are going through trials and when we desire to be instruments in His hands. He provides opportunities for us to have special moments and see blessings all around us…sometimes even in the midst of sore trials.” Connie Cahill, April 2013.
\n“A good friend of mine, John, went in for back surgery and after many struggles, came down with an infection. As part of his attempts at recovery, he was given medicine that obstructed his bowels to a point of extreme pain and discomfort. John and I served together in an Elders Quorum Presidency with our good friend, Josh, who has cerebral palsy. Even though Josh was in a wheelchair, he always wanted to find ways to serve. When Josh had heard that his brother in the Lord was suffering so much, he felt that he could help. He too had bowel obstruction at one point in his life and knew the incredible pain that it caused. He also had gone to the hospital and gone through rigorous and invasive procedures to fix this issue. When he heard that John was suffering, he prayed that he could take that pain away from John. He knew what the pain was like, he knew that he could handle it, so he prayed fervently for this pain to transfer to him. The next morning, John was miraculously cured of his ailment, and simultaneously Josh was brought into the hospital for a sudden issue with bowel obstruction. Josh truly took on the pain of his good friend, and brother, John.” Clinton Brown, April 2013.

\nLeRoy Nielson was born in Cedarview, Duchesne County, Utah on March 24, 1918 to Niels and Ella Gilbert Nielson. He lived on the north side of the Duchesne River on a farm until he was 18 that had canyons on both sides of it.
\nSCHOOLING
\nHe attended 1st to 5th grades in Cedarview. It was a one-room building used for the Relief Society meetings of the ward. He was promoted from 1st to 3rd grades, skipping the 2nd grade. In 3rd grade he moved to a school that had 2 rooms (for grades 3rd-8th) with 2 teachers. He was retained in the 5th grade, which was the same grade his brother John was in. They sat together and played, making the teacher mad at them. They would poke the guys in front of them. Needless to say, they were both held back a year. John never returned to school, Leroy did.
\nWhen LeRoy attended 5th grade for the second time, it was in Roosevelt, 5 miles away. A bus drove the high school and grade school children. The junior and high schools were in a 2-story building (grades 7-12). Junior high consisted of grades 7-9 and high school from grades 10-12. He was held back in the 7th grade and refused to go back to school again that year. In 8th grade through the rest of high school he earned passable grades.
\nCHILDHOOD
\nAs a young boy, LeRoy, John, Glen and their neighbors, Burn and Wheeland Barr would hang out together. They were the same ages. They lived on a farm. The boys went camping every Easter on a big campout without their parents. They would build a campfire and sit around and talk. They would play hide-n-seek in the forest. They usually went up on Saturday and spent the day in the mountains then came home. Once in a while the stayed overnight on Friday as well. This became a long lasting yearly tradition.
\nLeRoy also herded cows in the summer. He would take them into the hills. His father taught him to hold his hand out to the western mountain with the sunlight going down until the sun reached a certain level. This was a good way to help him determine the time he should start bringing the cows home. LeRoy has always been proud of his father for teaching him this way to tell what time it was. He was about 6 when he began to herd the cows.
\nHe had to milk a cow morning and night in addition to other farm work. On the farm they had horses, cows, turkeys, pigs and chickens. They didn’t require much care other than feeding and watering them. LeRoy also helped butcher them. His dad would take a turkey and tie it up so it would choke. They would cut the throat until it died then they would take off all the feathers and clean out the insides. His mom would can it unless they were eating it right away. They would also hunt rabbits and eat them. They became quite experienced in catching skunks. The skunks would get into the chicken coop. LeRoy set up a trap and caught one. It stunk up the chicken coop so bad his dad made him take it away from there.
\nHitchhiking was fairly common and safe. LeRoy wouid cross over the Duschene River to hitch a ride into Roosevelt or Duschene. It took a lot of waiting to finally get a ride.
\nHis dad was a good mechanic and would always fix things around the home and the farm machinery. LeRoy loved to watch him fix things to see how everything went together and help out if he could. He thought it was an important skill to learn. He enjoyed fixing things much more than his brothers did. They never became mechanics. Roy would help his dad work on the family car, a Studebaker. It was a sedan turned into a pickup truck. His dad bought it after it had been in an accident and a man had been killed in it. They fixed it up together. A man gave LeRoy a car to fix up when he was about 13. LeRoy could fix the engine, but he couldn’t afford to buy tires. He never was able to drive it because he was too young to drive and had no license. In the summers he slept in the back of the car. The first time he started the car, his mom was close by and was very pleased. He doesn’t remember what eventually happened to the car.
\nHIGH SCHOOL
\nLeRoy took shop all 6 years learning carpentry. He made a shop toolbench and a bookcase. He also took auto shop every year whether or not he needed it. He increased his knowledge of mechanics here. In 10th grade, he became involved in the Future Farmer’s of America Club (FFA) where he learned to raise pigs. He also began to attend seminary classes in a separate building from the school. In the gym Roy and some of his friends would play basketball and sometimes box each other for fun.
\nLeRoy went to school with Lorriane Day, the movie actress. She was a year older than him in school. He didn’t know much about her. Once she became a famous actress before the war, LeRoy would tell people that he knew her. He saw her in one movie.
\nLeRoy was the MIA Dance Director in Bridgeland and a Sunday School counselor while in his teens.
\nWORLD’S FAIR IN CHICHAGO, ILLINOIS
\nThe FFA planned a trip to attend the World’s Fair in Chicago in 1933 under the leadership of Walter Atwood, a teacher. He wrote letters back and forth to Chicago to make arrangements. LeRoy was involved in a fundraiser for it. The FFA put on a dance with a boxing tournament. Mr. Atwood asked LeRoy to box in the tournament in Vernal so he did. He had no training, just a few tips from an athletics teacher. None of his brothers or father boxed, just LeRoy. LeRoy boxed 3 times, lost 2, won 1. He put on a good show. Mr. Atwood was talking about what each boy did to earn money to attend the World’s Fair. He said of LeRoy, “He boxed and got boxed.” The FFA got the money. All Roy got was a bloody nose. The Inst. Members of the American Legion was their sponsor for this trip providing eating and sleeping accommodations.
\nAt age 16, LeRoy left Duchesne County for the first time to go on the trip to the World’s Fair. He wore a big hat and Levis and took a bedroll and extra clothing for the trip. It cost $24 to go, $12 for clothing and $12 for food. His father, Niels, paid for the expenses. There was a total of 75 people who made the trip: 8 adults, a nurse, board members, instructors and their partners. They traveled in 2 school buses and 1 truck covered with canvas which served as a kitchen. Two Indian boys, dressed in their traditional dress, were asked to lead the group to Chicago.
\nThey drove to Wyoming the first day on Highway 30. The first night the group camped between the Highway and some railroad tracks. It was a noisy night with heavy traffic. Leroy didn’t get much sleep and he saw a train for the first time. During the night an Indian left and was hitchhiking when Walter Atwood found him, took him to the bus depot and sent him home.
\nThey spent their trip marching through all the big cities. The remaining Indian led, followed by a drummer and a bugler (which sounded the “wake up” and “go to bed” calls for the group).
\nIn Chicago, they went to the Quaker Oats Factory and the Jolley ET???/prison. They camped in a park and spent 2 days going to the fair. They saw displays from all over the world showing plants and new inventions. LeRoy was able to buy a large Mr. Goodbar candybar for just 5 cents. This was his favorite candybar.
\nOn the way home they went a different route to do some sightseeing. They went south on Highway 40 to Springfield, Illinois to see Abraham Lincoln’s tomb monument. In St. Louis, Missouri, they went to a Holy Rollers church and watched them go into spasms in a park. In Independence, Missouri, they saw all the LDS Church History sites.
\nLEROY’S FATHER
\nLeRoy’s dad died in 1935 before he graduated. They had the funeral a couple of days before high school graduation. Niels had been bitten by a tick and contracted Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. One month before his death, he went to the hospital for a couple of days. He felt really good and came home. He was crossing the irrigation ditch to get some cows. He slipped and fell in to the water. He became very sick, went back to the hospital (a small old house), then died.
\nJOBS AFTER HIGH SCHOOL
\nLeRoy graduated from high school in 1936. That fall he went to Idaho to work on the potato and beet harvest with Marlin Murphy and Robert Houtz. He was 18 years old. Marlin had a car to get them there. In the fall of 1937, he went up there again to work in the harvest. He stayed at his Aunt Jenny’s (his dad’s sister) house. A dump truck loaded with potatoes brought them to a building. LeRoy worked on a spud sorter which in that building was down 4-feet in a spud cellar. It was very cool. All winter he sorted the potatoes using a chain which moved across a table. The bad ones were tossed and the good ones were shipped.
\nDEPRESSION
\nMeanwhile back at home, the Depression hit hard. Because of the dry spells, crops didn’t grow and were burnt in the heat. The family had to sell their cows and home and move to Bridgeland for a couple of years. LeRoy went back home to live with his mother after the year’s work in Idaho. He got a job with a fellow working in a canyon a little bit from Duschene in Strawberry Canyon. He mined laterite. He would climb in a hole straight down with a pick and bucket. He would fill a bucket of waste, dirt and dust, then have to climb out and dump it. It was used to help make rubber. He did this for about 1 year. This helped his mom a little bit financially. Then he went to Midvale to work at the processing plant that processed the ore he had mined. He had to put the material in the hot fire then take it out. He would dump the waste. He rented a room at a boarding house with another guy who had been working there for a while. It was at this time that he received a letter and had to go sign up for the draft in June of 1940 in Midvale. He was about 19 years old. Those who were eligible at the time, being at least 18 years old without dependants, received a letter that told them to go sign up for the draft. John, his older brother, was married and Glen was too young to sign up. Later as the war progressed, the requirements changed and they began to draft those with dependents, like John, Leroy’s brother.
\nMCCLARY, WASHINGTON AND BOXING
\nOne month later, July 1940, he moved to McClary, Washington with his two brothers, Glen and John. They got jobs making plywood in a Vineer plant. John was married and lived in the town next to McClary. Glen and LeRoy lived in a rental house and had separate rooms. Meals and showers were available. LeRoy’s job was to place heavy steel H-beams on top and under glued panels of plywood with a partner. A press would then apply a great deal of pressure on the boards using clamps, tightened by hand, for 24 hours. Then he would release it by picking up a heavy iron and releasing the clamps. Someone else would saw the plywood into 4′ x 8′ sized boards. Then the plywood would be loaded onto boats. In Washington LeRoy began boxing. Boxing was done the same as it is now. In 1941, he fought for the State Heavy Weight Boxing Title in Aberdeen and won it. Some people were unhappy that the former champion lost. They demanded a rematch. LeRoy planned to do the fight, but was drafted before the rematch could be arranged, so he forfeited the title. He didn’t care about the title.
\nWhile in McClary, a draft office called him to tell him to report to the service. Leroy requested that he return to Midvale to see his family. They granted his request. He was called by the Midvale office right away so he returned to Utah. The war for the United States had not started yet, but they were preparing to help the war going on in Europe.
\nMEETS THE GIRL OF HIS DREAMS
\nOn June 3, 1941 LeRoy went to the Coconut Grove in Salt Lake City, a popular public dance hall. LeRoy came by himself and stood for a while watching everyone dance. He was not in his uniform yet. He noticed Beth and decided that he would let her have a chance to dance before he asked her. She was there with her friends Ena Wood and Swede Whitney. After a while she didn’t go out and dance so he asked this beautiful young lady to dance. She accepted that dance and danced the rest of the evening. This lady turned out to be Elizabeth Lazenby, his future sweetheart and wife. After the dance, Roy and Beth went to the Town Club. Ena and Beth both worked there at the time. They sat around, goofed off and danced. It became pretty late so LeRoy walked her home. It took until 4 am for Beth to talk LeRoy into kissing her that night (according to LeRoy). After LeRoy left Beth’s presence he then walked to 4500 South 500 E. where his mother lived and arrived at just about daylight.
\nDRAFTED
\nFrom Midvale he rode the bus to Fort Douglas to be drafted into the army aircorp on June 4, 1941. They put the draftees all together and took them into Salt Lake. There they accepted them in and told them what they could expect. LeRoy was one of the first to be drafted into the United States Air Force. At the time you could either choose to be drafted into the army Air Corp for one year or join the Air Force for three years. He chose the former. To be processed for the draft he needed to fill out paperwork, have his blood drawn, vaccinated and weight calculated. They would ask about any medical problems the draftees had. LeRoy had none. That night, June 4, 1941, in the dark he went back to Fort Douglas. Beth came to visit him. There he waited to be shipped out for one week. They would get them up in the morning and tell them some things. On July 7th, he came down with a friend named Albert, from Idaho. We went to a show and then went back to the Town Club. He went on two more dates with Beth before he left for Moffitt Field in California.
\nMOFFITT FIELD
\nHe was sent to Moffitt Field, California on Monday to be in the Air Force for one year. The Air Force had leased Moffitt Field from the Navy for one year. There LeRoy was busy doing drills and carpentry work. He helped to do carpentry work by building the base for tents. On weekends James Stewart (the actor) would fly to Los Angeles sometimes. Jimmy Stewart was the drill sergeant for the base. LeRoy saw him from a distance but never spoke to him. There wasn’t much to do so they would play volleyball and other things. At the end of the summer, football season began. They never had a football program at LeRoy’s high school so he had never played before. He practiced with the team and played their entire first game. His position was tackle in offense and defense. There were only enough players for 1 team who did it all – offense and defense. He was hardly ever taken out for a rest. When football season was over, they started a boxing program and asked for those who were interested in participating. Leroy went for it. He only boxed one guy. LeRoy felt he had won, but the referee gave the win to the other guy and LeRoy graciously lost. There was a room with boxing equipment for them to use when practicing.
\nTHANKSGIVING BREAK 1941
\nMeanwhile Beth and LeRoy had kept in touch through letters. She left her job at the Town Club and became a salad girl at Beau Brummells Cafe. For Thanksgiving break, Leroy hitchhiked back to Utah. It took him 19 rides to get there. He arrived about the 24th of November and stayed for a two-week furlough. Beth was with him every night, but two all the time he was there. They went to the six dances during the two weeks. They danced every dance together and really enjoyed it. Beth had a hard time standing up on the slick floor but Roy never let her fall. Their main song was “Tonight We Love”. They still hold this song dear to their hearts. Beth met his Mother and family during these two weeks.
\nOn December 7, 1941 Beth heard on the radio in a restaurant in Salt Lake that the war for the United States had begun. Pearl Harbor had been attacked by the Japanese. When Leroy finally arrived in Salt Lake, Beth told him the news. All servicemen were told to report back to base immediately. LeRoy stayed in Salt Lake two days and asked Beth at her apartment (after going to a show) if she would marry him sometime. Her reply was “I think so.”
\nBETH VISITS MOFFITT FIELD
\nThe next morning Roy left for camp. On LeRoy’s return back to base, football ended and guard duty began until the spring of 1942. Guard duty consisted of holding a gun in a foxhole dug in the ground in case of any bombing. Men would sign up to do anything (Officer’s Training, building a new base, etc.) to get out of guard duty. On February 27th, Beth rode the bus and went to Moffett Field to visit LeRoy for a week. She stayed in a hotel in a small town, Mt. View. It was 5-8 miles from camp. Roy had to go on guard duty every day at four so Beth would walk out there about noon and stay until four. Beth would go back to the hotel room and read.
\nLeRoy got a 24-hour pass on the second of March. Beth went out and met him and then they went into town and got him a hotel room and then took the bus to San Jose. They went to a show and had something to eat afterwards. Then they got on the bus and went to Mt. View. They got up early on the third and went into San Francisco. Roy bought Beth her rings and then he bought her a dress and a pair of sandals. Beth bought a few things for her folks and then they got on a bus and went to the ocean. They walked along the beach for awhile. They had lunch at a little cafe there along the beach. They walked down in the park and matched pennies. They started saving their pennies and later she bought three dollars in defense stamps with them. They made their packages into smaller ones and then took a bus into town then on to Mt. View. Two days later Beth went out to Mill Valley on a bus and spent the night with her brother, Arthur, and his family who was a Captain at the Persidio, the Pentagon in San Francisco, and who served in Africa.
\nBeth returned to Utah two days later and resumed her work at the Beau Brummell Cafe. She left there in April and went out to the Small Arms Plant. LeRoy and Beth kept corresponding and enjoyed it. She met Glen and Stanley during this time.
\nCHICO
\nThey took a group of soldiers and sent them up to Chico in July 1942. LeRoy was a part of this group. On the fourteenth he received a 5-day pass and hitchhiked back to Salt Lake to see Beth.
\nMARRIAGE
\nThey went to a dance the night he arrived, on Tuesday. On the fifteenth, Wednesday, while Beth was at work she thought about what they had said the night before. Her friend, Lila Packer said that if she let him go now she might be sorry. With all this thinking on her mind, she went home, out to Midvale. She had decided to marry Roy and didn’t want to lose him. She was about ready when he got there that night. They didn’t have time to get the blood tests and they both just had a test recently so they knew it was all right. Beth called up at the Small Arms Plant and made arrangements to have someone work in her place the next morning. They caught a bus and went into Evanston, Wyoming. They couldn’t get a license that night because it was midnight by the time they got there. They got hotel rooms and the next morning Roy came pounding on her door. He told here to hurry because the county Clerk, Matthews, was on his way down to fix the license. After Roy had an examination, they went up to the Justice of the Peace’s place. Judge Reul Walton married them and his wife was one of the witnesses. They were married at 8:15 am on July 16, 1942. After they were married they went to the hotel and got their things and had breakfast in one of the cafes.
\nHONEYMOON
\nThen Roy bought her a wedding present. She picked it out. It was a table fountain pen and a set of yellow lamb flower vases. They caught a bus at nine and came back to Utah. They rushed out to Midvale. Beth changed her clothes and put a few things into a bag. They got back in town and she gave her things to Roy and took a taxi out to the Small Arms Plant to work. All of her friends were so glad for her and wished her a lot of luck. That night it thundered and lightning just terrible while she was at work. They had a regular cloudburst out there. She worked from three to eleven and then met Roy up town. He had a room at the New House Hotel. Beth got up the next morning at six and went back to work. She left at eleven and went to their room. Roy was out at his mother’s place so she bathed and cleaned up. She called Ena and told her she was married. Ena about fainted. After Roy came home they went to the Rotisserei for dinner and then we went out to his mother’s for a little while. Then they came back into town and went to a show. Saturday morning, Beth got up and went to work at six. Roy took a bus and went back to Chico so the short honeymoon was over. All of Beth’s friends at the Small Arms Plant went in together and bought her a lovely white satin nightie. Her friends were: Lila (Smokey) Packer, Amy Webster, Dorothy Schoal, Beth Lenord, Cleo Taggart, June Draper, Myrl Fox, Vanda Axtell and Orson Johnson, Paul, Russell and Lee.
\nAmy Webster became very ill so Smokey, Dot, Dot’s sister-in-law and brother and Beth went to Idaho to see her. It was just a little ways from Preston. They sure had a lot of fun both coming and going. Amy’s mother fixed them a big chicken dinner. Boy was that good. They got back in Utah at four in the morning and went to work at three in the afternoon.
\nTwo weeks after they were married, Beth quit her job to move to Chico to be with Roy. She sure hated to leave her friends but she wanted to be with her husband. Her friend Jean Allen gave her a shower in Salt Lake. She got some very nice things. Then she went home to Manti, Mother and Barbara gave her another one. She got a lot of nice things there too.
\nREUNION IN CHICO
\nBeth left Tuesday morning for Chico and let her dear mother put away all her gifts. Beth arrived at eight o’clock on Thursday night. Roy couldn’t get a pass for the night so she talked to him on the phone and then took a bath and went to bed. She was very tired after that ride. He came down the next day at two in the afternoon. They lived in the Park Hotel for a week. Beth met his cousins down there and went to church with them one Sunday when Roy couldn’t get a pass until later.
\nBeth found an apartment up at 1019 Normal Street in Chico, California. They had a nice apartment and were happy there. They met some very nice people, which later became some of their best friends. They liked our landlady and her husband very much, Alfred and Delia Evans. They were so much fun and very nice. They also met Mrs. Marie Goebel, Mr. and Mrs. Grinnell (Herbert), and Mrs. Katherine Nau. Beth worked in the almond orchard for Mrs. Nau. She had just lost her husband three months before and felt very bad. Beth did a little housework for Mrs. Grinnell. While there, Roy and Beth walked out to the famous Hooker Oak, three and a half miles from town. It’s said to be the largest oak tree in the world. 8,000 people can stand under its branches. Roy was called on a four day alert so Beth spent the next four days very lonesome. Beth went to a show one night with Mrs. Wright, a neighbor.
\nBOISE, IDAHO
\nShortly after the alert, they moved to Boise, Idaho where Roy trained on airplanes and Beth worked at a drive-in. Pendleton, Oregon was their next home. Roy was in a store when he heard his first air raid siren. He stood in the doorway. It only lasted a short time. Roy’s name was on the shipping out to a new station list then the next day was off the list. Beth had already left on the bus. Roy got on a train to California. When he arrived, they had no papers on him. They sent for his papers and he stayed there. They also lived in Stockton, California. Beth got a job at a motel. The manager was hesitant to hire her because the hotel was located beside two army bases. One half-hour later, Roy called to say they were being transferred.
\nRoy was accepted to Officer’s School in North Carolina. They rode a train to Salt Lake. They sat together most of the time. Roy slept in a bed and Beth slept in the seats. A large black man asked Beth to have breakfast with him. Once in Salt Lake, Beth got off to stay a while and Roy continued on to school. In class they learned how to be good leaders and studied strategic moves. Roy completed his training and was called in before a board of review. They asked if he could do trigonometry or if he had any further math experience. He said that he had never heard of trigonometry. They suggested that he stop the program because of not having any more math experience. He was sent back into the Air Force in St. Louis, Missouri with Beth accompanying him. She worked at Woolworth’s drug store for one month while Roy ran over hills and boxed a little.
\nAfter they had been married 9 months, Roy was sent overseas to Hawaii in 1943. Beth went home to Salt Lake and worked there for a short time. Then she worked at a dress shop in Manti for the two years three months he was gone. She also served a six-month stake mission in the South Sanpete Stake. They corresponded through letters that were censored. Their code names were Isabel and Gilbert. Beth knew Roy was restationed when he wrote, “I hear Gilbert is moving.
\nOVERSEAS
\nRoy spent 10 months in Hawaii. He rode a boat for 4 days to get there. On board, they had a boxing tournament. Roy didn’t box because they had a bad floor. One guy took off his shoes to box. It was a hot day and it peeled the skin off his foot. He was able to attend LDS services in Hawaii. He didn’t have time to sightsee the Hawaii Temple or Polynesian Culture Center. They were kept busy. He spent time on Funi Funi (1 month), Ellis Island (2 months), Wake Island and Guam.
\nFUNIFUNI
\nOn Funi Funi LeRoy dug his own foxhole and lived in it. The white waves crested and showed the outline of the small island at night for their enemies. They would drop bombs on the island. The plane he flew in on took a direct hit the first night he was there. He didn’t think he wanted to stay there very long after that. He would be sleeping in his bunk until he heard bombs then he would dive into his foxhole where he would be safe from them unless he took a direct hit. He had several close calls with bombs. One bomb hit about 12 feet away from him. The next morning he came out of his foxhole and saw 2 sailor boys who had taken a direct hit. This was the closest the action of the war came to him. They packed up after a month and went to Hawaii for a short repair. After this time a bomb that explodes before it hits land was invented.
\nWAKE ISLAND
\nOn Wake Island he helped prepare for the Battle of Midway which was a turning point in the war against the Japanese. He stopped here for 3 weeks before he went to Guam. He helped there with the pilots. He was an electrician on the B24’s. Using the grounded aircrafts he was able to take parts from 2 planes to make one plane. He liked it here because there was never any bombings.
\nGUAM
\nThen he spent 10 months in Guam. He went with a boatload of people and spent 2 days on the ocean until the island was secured and taken over by the Americans. He landed on the east end of the island and had to hike to the west end. It was a pretty good walk. When they got close to camp they were told to make a big long line and to pick up every object that didn’t belong there like trash. Roy was walking along and kicked a boot. It bounced back because it was attached to a Japanese body that had been buried by a bulldozer. He’s not sure exactly what happened to that body. When they were done they set up camp. Roy pitched his tent then leaned his short rifle against the tent. In the morning it was covered with moisture from the humidity. He picked it up by the barrel and left his fingerprints on it. When he arrived on the island, some Japanese were still there trying to find food, not to fight. They only had one bombing while here. He never had to dig or get in a foxhole.
\nThe planes would take off and land on the island. His job was to make sure the airplanes were in working order and he enjoyed doing it. Roy or one of 3 other guys who did the same job needed to be there when they landed so he and the pilot could look at the plane together and talk about what needed to be fixed on the plane. Sometimes it was a couple simple things, sometimes it was something more complicated. If Roy could see what the problem was, he could fix it. He would work on the plane to get it in the best flying condition he could to eliminate as much risk as he could for the pilot and crew. There were plenty of parts they could use from planes that had been hit by a missle or something and interchange those parts to the working airplanes.
\nThe eating conditions were good and he never went hungry. There were 6-8 people per tent. It became pretty cramped with 8 in a tent. One of the guys in LeRoy’s tent was pretty tall and fun to be around. There was some time for entertainment. A group of guys would get out a play a ballgame or do other activities. It wouldn’t last very long.
\nThere were 4 or 5 groups of religious services. They would announce the time and place for the LDS services on Sunday. There was a crowd every time. It followed the typical LDS service format with opening and closing prayers and songs and talks. Chaplains gave most of the talks. This was the only place LeRoy could attend church, besides Hawaii. Once they took pictures of the LDS group and sent them back to church headquarters to go in the Church News. The atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki while Roy was in Guam. His reaction was that he was just glad they weren’t close to him. One day Roy received a telegram on his lunch break that said the war in Europe was over. Not much celebrating went on, they were just happy to see the trail coming home getting bigger. He was here for about 1year.
\nCOMING HOME
\nAt this time, the war had pretty much ended in Europe and Japan. There was a rest and recuperation program which lasted for 45 days for those servicemen who had been overseas a long time and had earned enough points to go home. Roy applied for this and went home. He stayed at his mother’s house in Salt Lake. Meanwhile Roy’s outfit was sent to Okinawa to help with post war business. His 45 days rest and recuperation were not over yet when his outfit went to Okinawa so he was discharged at Fort Douglas and rode a bus into Salt Lake. Irene and Beth were going back and forth between bus and train stations trying to find Roy. He called them and they were waiting to meet his bus.
\nAFTER THE WAR
\nAfter the war Beth and Roy decided it was time to buy a house so they purchased the one they own in Midvale, 746 East 7800 West.
\nSCOUTING
\nYears later Roy was able to go to Japan for the Scout National Jamboree. He was there 1year exactly before Clifford was called to serve his mission in” Japan. Roy was thrilled Cliff was called to a mission in Japan and held no resentment towards the Japanese people. LeRoy became acquainted with a man while there and stopped to talk to him often. He was interesting to talk to. This man was in charge of the place where Roy was staying. When Cliff went on his mission, Roy had him look up this man. He never did take the missionary discussions. Prior to going to Japan he had attended 2 Scout National Jamborees in Farragut, Idaho, and 1 in Pennsylvania. The scouts stayed at an army base converted to a scout camp in Pennsylvania. He went to West Virginia 5 different times for the Scout National Jamboree as well. He loved attending these events.

\nI was born in Minersville, Beaver County, Utah on Jan. 12, 1872 in a small adobe house in the southwest corner of town. My parents names were John Thomas Lazenby and Annie Tether Lazenby who were emigrants from England, Father coming from Hull and Mother from Doncaster. They crossed the ocean together in the sailing vessel The Emerald Isle, which was the last sailing vessel to bring emigrants across the ocean, and it sank on the return trip to England, this in 1868. They were six weeks making the voyage and then crossed the plains with ox team. They were married in the Old Endowment House in Salt Lake City, Utah and started married life in a dugout at the head of Echo Canyon. He worked on the railroad. Later they moved to Battle Creek now Pleasant Grove in Utah County, then to Minersville where I was born on Jan. 12, 1872.
\nI was the second child in a family of nine children of my Mother’s. My Father had one son Walter by a former marriage whose Mother died in England. In our family there were Henry, myself, Annetta, Sarah Ann, John Thomas, Annie, Phebe Estella, Edith Henryetta and Bertha Maria. My parents joining the United Order and put all they had into it, when it dissolved or broke up in the fall of 1877 my Father got for his share, five bushels of corn and ten acres of land in the Minersville field. I remember the field with its coccle burs and sunflowers and the picket or rip gut fence that surrounded it.
\nMy memories of Minersville are very meager as Father moved with his family in the Spring of 1878 to the Sevier and located at Prattsville between Richfield and Glenwood, where he farmed during the summer of 1879. I, with my brother Henry, who was two years older, herded cows on the banks of the Sevier River. The cows frequently crossed the stream and we would wade after them, often in water up to our chins, and I now wonder that we did not drown.
\nIn November, 1878 we moved to Rabbit Valley (Loa) where I first remember coming in contact with Indians. We first lived in a rented house made of logs, daubed or chinked with mud, a dirt floor and a dirt roof, with factory cloth for window glass. Here we spent the first winter and at that time we were eight in family in one little room which not only contained the family but all our provisions. On cold days the Indians frequently crowded in till Mother could scarcely move around in the house and us children were crowded to the back of the room while the Indians huddled over the fire. In the Spring Father built a log cabin down on the farm he had located about one and one half miles south of the Loa town site. Here we spent four years. I herded cows in summer and attended school in winter. My Father was my first school teacher, school being held in private.
\nI was baptized April 7, 1881 by my Father. Later I attended school in what was called East Loa in a log meeting house with a dirt floor and a dirt roof, with split logs set on for desks and under them logs for benches. We had to walk across the valley, through rabbit brush one and a half miles and had to cross the numerous streams on poles and fences. Our text books were very meager and the school equipment extremely limited.
\nIn 1884 I contacted diphtheria and took it home to the family. All of us children had it and my brother Henry, age fourteen years and my sister, Annie, four years old died. The year before my Father broke his leg, which placed a great responsibility upon my brother Henry, who assumed it manfully not withstanding his tender age, and now he was gone, and Father whose leg was not properly set was a cripple for the remaining years of his life. This left more than my share of the family responsibility on me. Father planted crops and for three years I did not succeed in ripening any wheat; so that bread stuff became very much of a consideration. He had raised a crop of wheat on the Sevier in the summer of 1878 and had it milled in Glenwood and took milled products, which consisted of flour, shorts and bran. The first year we did fairly well for bread as we had the flour, then because of crop failure, we were obliged to eat the shorts and bran and even that failed. We ate thistles, tones and pigweeds, when they were in season and somehow we got along. We dressed in buckskin and anything we could get. We went barefoot in the summer because we had no shoes; however, my sister Annetta and I had a pair of shoes between us and when we were herding cows, took turns wearing the shoes and carrying each other across places where slivers were so numerous we could not travel barefooted. There was some compensation on the other hand, for the one that was barefooted carried the other across streams. I was not old enough to appreciate how hard these times were for my parents, whose responsibility it was to feed and clothe us. Contact with snakes and skunks were of a frequent occurrence for truly we were in a wild country. The first settlers had preceded us into the country about three years and there were a few cattle- men and some others.
\nI associated with other boys and had my fling trying to learn to smoke and chew tobacco, but thanks to the influence of my saintly mother I never contracted the habit. Some of my companions were given to getting drunk which so disgusted me that I let liquor alone. I was always of a religious turn and placed considerable reliance upon the Lord and often sought Him in my troubles. I often had an answer to prayer which greatly strengthened my faith in the Lord.
\nOne incident I will relate. One evening while bringing the cows home, one of them became unruly and would not stay with the others. My father had given me a pocket knife, I think the first one I had ever owned and I prized it very highly. I wanted to teach the cow a lesson and taking the knife from my pocket, I threw it at the cow and thought to hit her in the side and so go and get the knife again, but as frequently happens our calculations miscarry, as mine did and instead of hitting the cow, the knife passed over her back and landed in the thick tall sage brush beyond. I immediately began searching for it, for it seemed if I did not find it, it would be a calamity of the first magnitude, but I searched in vain. Darkness was rapidly approaching and I was feeling almost ill because of the loss of my precious knife. I decided I could not find it so kneeled down and asked the Lord to show me where my knife was. I arose from my knees and walked straight to a thicket of brush where I had looked before and there found my knife at once, only a childish incident, but one that has remained with me through the years.
\nBeing raised as it were among the Indians, I tried to imitate them somewhat, and as the weapons, as well as play things of the Indian boys was largely the bow and arrow, I too, carried a bow and arrow and in shooting contests with the Indian boys sometimes came out victorious, which gave me a lot of satisfaction.
\nMy Mother taught me to pray and the habit formed in my childhood has remained with me.
\nOn my twelfth birthday in 1884, I was ordained a deacon in the 15th quorum of the Sevier Stake by Elias H. Blackburn and that was a proud day for me. We held deacons meetings on Saturday nights and I would walk from the farm to the meeting place one and one half miles through brush much taller than I was, and had many a start as some nights, prowling animals would dart into the brush or cross the road in the darkness. When I reached the age of fifteen I was called to accompany Apostle Brigham Young and his cousin John R. Young down to the Colorado River at Hall’s crossing, to take a load of oats to feed Apostle Young’s team as they were going to Bluff to settle some Indian trouble and to get away from the U.S. deputy marshals who wanted them for polygamy. Soon after my return I was ordained a priest by Bishop Elias H. Blackburn on July 3, 1887 and was ordained an Elder by Thomas Blackburn Jan. 8, 1890. I served as an assistant to Teancum Hunt in the Y.M.M.I.A. from May 25, 1893 until Oct 1st. 1894. I was ordained a Seventy in the 82nd quorum by Walter H. Jeffery and became secretary of the quorum.
\nI was called on a mission to New Zealand, and left home Oct 1, 1894, attended general conference in Salt Lake City and went through the Salt Lake Temple and received my endowments Oct. 10, 1894. I took a ship for my mission field Oct. 17, 1894 on the steam ship Morowai. I had the usual experience of seasickness and other things connected with ocean travel, and in due time reached the island of Hawaii and stopped there a few hours. It sure seemed good to see land and feel it under my feet again. We called at Samoa but did not land, saw the native guys and girls swim out to the ship and dive for coins, they were very splendid swimmers. We reached New Zealand and was assigned to labor in the Hawraker district with J. M. Folkman of Plain City as my companion.
\nI had to learn the Maori language and customs among which was Hongi or nose rubbing custom of greeting. Our principle diet was boiled potatoes, sometimes we had bread, meat and fish. We traveled for the most part on horseback, much of the time in the mud and rain for it frequently rained daily for months at a time. The climate temperature is about like California, being about as far South of the Equator as California is North. There was a great deal of foggy weather which proved to be bad on my lungs, as I had a lung infection from the time I had diphtheria in 1884. This finally led to my being released some 2 and 1/2 years later on account of my not being able to stand the dampness and the fog.
\nWilliam Gardener was president of the Mission when I arrived and Ezra F. Richards when I was released. I had the usual difficulty in learning the language and was there seven months before I could speak or preach in the native tongue. I baptized fifty seven persons, mostly Maoris. They were a simple, lovable, charitable and trusting people and one could easily see they were from the blood of Israel from reading the Book of Mormon and becoming acquainted with the customs and mannerisms of the Maori people that there were many things in common between them.
\nOn Monday November 11, 1895 we had an experience that shows the Lord looks after His servants. Elder Folkman and myself went from Kiri Kiri down the coast by way of Cabbage Bay across the Isthmus to Wairoa, a long three days journey and this being just the breaking up of winter and still in the rainy season, the trails were very muddy and traveling very laborious. We decided to return by another route. We left Wairoa on a cloudy morning and went to Mata Mata and then over the mountain to Whangapoua. The natives at Mata Mata told us we could not get through as the trail over the mountain had not been used for years but sooner than re-travel through all the mud, we decided to try. We started up the mountain where the trail used to go, and all went well for a time. We found many trees fallen across the trail and soon the vines and underbrush became so thick and tangled that we lost our way entirely, so all we could do was keep climbing. It soon began to rain and we were obliged to walk and lead our horses, we soon became wet, but after hours of hard work we reached the top and found it to be a small plateau covered with the New Zealand brush. We began searching for the trail and found what we thought was it. We followed it until it come only to a dead end. Then we turned back and tried again in another place, with the same result until we were nearly exhausted, finally we discovered an opening leading in the direction we wanted to go and followed it and to our joy it led down from the top of the mountain, but our joy was short lived for it soon closed out, and we came to a stop. After hunting for some time, we discovered a small stream of water and knew if we could but follow it, we could reach the ocean. Only those who have tried to penetrate the New Zealand brush when there is no trail can properly understand what we were facing. Night was coming on; the rain had continued falling all day. As we were working our way down the stream, we came to where the stream widened and the brush opened up a little. We got on our horses to ride, I was in the rear. As we turned a bend in the stream, I chanced to look over my shoulder and saw something that made me call to Folkman. He stopped to learn what I wanted, I said look yonder on that tree stump on the bank; “What is it?” He said it looks like bread. I got down and went to see and sure enough a piece of bread one-half loaf cooked in a round bake oven, I brought it to him and we soon devoured it. It tasted extremely nice and there was just enough to satisfy our hunger and not withstanding it was a small clearing, exposed to the rain, the crust was just moist, while we were drenched to the skin. Our hunger appeased, we proceeded in better spirits and finally long after night fall emerged from the brush on to the seashore and found ourselves at Whangapoua. We got shelter with a woman, who gave us food and a bed, and we were in a condition to appreciate both. Next morning when we told the people we came over the mountain, they could scarcely believe us, as they said it could not be done. We told them of finding the bread and this they scarcely believed, for they said no one had been in that locality for a long time. Our saddle, clothes and wraps were much the worse for the terrible scratching and rubbing they got coming through the brush, but we rejoiced that even under such circumstances, we were protected and provided for.
\nWe had many pleasant and inspiring times and I learned to love those Maori people like my own flesh and blood. In the fall of 1895 Elder Folkman returned home and I succeeded him as president of the district and was given Albert E. Asper of Salt Lake City as traveling companion. I became so proficient in the language that the Maoris often said that I spoke better Maori than they did. I was troubled from the first with asthma and when the weather was damp and foggy, I would sometimes suffer considerably.
\nI received many direct answers to prayer and among other things received a sure testimony of the truthfulness of the gospel I was preaching. I was blessed to heal the sick by laying on of hands and have rejoiced much at the way the Lord has sustained me. On account of ill health, I was released and returned home by way of Australia, Fiji, Hawaii and Vancouver and arrived home April 11, 1897. After arriving home I attended Snow Academy in Ephraim during the winters of 1897-8. On May the 28,____?, I was set apart to preside over all the Elders Quorums in Wayne Stake (although a Seventy) I was also set apart by Apostle Lyman to preside over the Religion classes in the Wayne Stake.
\nAt a conference shortly after I came from my mission, some of the leading brethren were in attendance and one of them arose and said, “Here is Brother Lazenby home from his mission, now we want you to put him to work, put the harness on him and also the saddle and if it need be put a man in the saddle with spurs but keep him to work”. And this they have done for I have always been busy and tried to do what I have been asked to do. I was soon chosen 2nd assistant to the Stake Supt. of Sunday Schools also an aid to the Stake Supt. of Y.M.M.I.A. on Nov 6, 1897.
\nOn October 14, 1898, I was married to Rosa May Stewart, this has proven to be the crowning blessing of my life for although we have been married for over forty years, and have passed through many changes and lived in many homes, she has always been patient, loving and kind, and thoughtful and by her sweet unselfish life has brought much sunshine and happiness to me. She has always taught the children to be loving and kind to me and I thank the Lord daily for her and all she has meant to me throughout the years and I know if I am only worthy of her in the next life, that I shall receive a companion that will make life full for me in eternity. May the Lord ever bless her. Whether we had much or little, she never complained but looked forward for things to work out well. She has ever been an aid to me in my religious callings and labors. Ten children came to bless our home namely: Leland Moroni, Wallace Stewart, he having passed away at the age of 34, Rosa May, Urban John, who died when he was 2 years old, Arthur J., Leslie Walter, Koa Ellen, Bertha, Beth, and Barbara.
\nI acted as County commissioner, also Tax Assessor and was a member of the school board of Wayne County. I was also chosen to act as Stake Counselor in the Y.M.M.I.A. Afterwards at a conference held Nov. 2, I was put in as Stake Supt. of Sunday Schools and was set apart by G.S. Bastian and was sustained a member of the Board of Education, also as a member of the Stake Building Committee of the Wayne Stake tabernacle. At this time I was ordained a High Priest and set apart as a member of the Stake High Council which position I held until Jan 1, 1912, when I was chosen as second counselor of the Wayne Stake to labor with President Joseph Eckersely and John R. Stewart and was set apart by Apostle Francis R. Lyman on April 5, 1912 and held that position until the spring of 1917 when we moved to Aurora, Sevier County.
\nWe bought a farm between Sigurd and Aurora but joined the Aurora Ward and acted as ward teacher and home missionary in that Stake. We built a nice home here on the farm and thought we would make it our home permanently, but on Jan. 20, 1921 a Priesthood meeting was held at Richfield and the Sevier Stake was divided into 3 stakes, North Sevier, South Sevier, and Sevier. I was chosen to preside over North Sevier, my counselors being J. Arthur Christensen from Redwood and Jesse Thornell from Salina. The afternoon conference was held in Salina and Stake authorities, as far as had been chosen were set apart by Apostle George F. Richards. North Sevier Stake consisted of Redmond, two wards in Salina, Aurora, Sigurd and Vermillian, and then it was necessary to leave our home and move to Aurora.
\nI acted as President of the Piute Reservoir and Irrigation Co. On the 20th of April, 1924 I was released as Stake President and was ordained a Patriarch by Apostle George F. Richards and at this time acted for some years as president of the High Priest Quorum of North Sevier and labored as teacher in Sunday School, Y.M.M.I.A. and Genealogical Committee. Leland, my oldest son became Bishop of the Aurora Ward. We traveled the 35 miles to the temple to do temple work. When the Manti Temple was remodeled and many more rooms were added, I was asked to go to Manti and help with its construction.
\nI did so and when it was finished, I was asked to work on Temple Hill in taking care of the flowers and beautifying the temple grounds. I bought a pioneer home on the Temple grounds paying $75.00 for it. This home I have improved in adding more rooms and improving the grounds so that now we are comfortably settled here at Manti. After the Temple was finished on March 2, 1936, President Robert D. Young asked me to assist in taking care of the Temple grounds in beautifying the grounds, which I have worked at since I came to Manti. I also did considerable “Night Guarding” of the temple and it is our responsibility to guard the temple and grounds every Sunday, taking it in turns. I was also asked to be an ordinance worker and assist in the temple and my wife is also an ordinance worker and we are enjoying this work. I also take much joy and pleasure in my Patriarchal work in the Sanpete Stake.
\nAt this time August of 1939, our children are all married except Beth and Barbara, and Beth expects to be before the year 1939 goes by. They were all married in the temple and we are very proud of them, and now with a home established near the temple, we look forward with hope and anticipation to the future to bring us many years of happiness and contentment for we hope this will be our home for the future.
\nI will mention here that we are taking the evergreen trees from the nearby mountains and setting tyhem out on this Temple Hill as has been done for many years. This fall we have taken 95 trees and planted them here on this beautiful temple hill.

\nMoroni wrote this life story in August 1939. He continued to work on the Temple grounds until a hernia operation in the spring of 1942 necessitated a limitation of his physical activities. He then served as night guard of the Manti Temple until just a few months before his death at the age of 81 years, 4 months and 25 days. The life story of his wife, Rosa May Stewart Lazenby, also includes details of these years.
\nThey loved their home and enjoyed being near the temple. Moroni gave many blessings in his Patriarchal work. He honored his Priesthood and was sustained by his Heavenly Father. Many people have borne grateful testimony with thankful hearts to their Heavenly Father for the blessings received by Moroni through the power of the Priesthood. One of these was recorded 10 Feb 1950 as Elder Gordon Van Hanks spoke while on a mission in the Northern California Mission. He tells that as a ten year old boy he suffered a bone infection that kept him in bed for two years. He was well for a few years and then the infection returned and was more serious than before. His parents were taking him to Salt Lake City and on the way stopped and asked Patriarch Lazenby to give the boy a blessing. In Gordon’s own words: “Moroni Lazenby gave the boy a wonderful blessing. He said that this boy would not have to undergo the serious operation that the doctors were intending. He gave him a blessing that he would become well and that he would go into the mission field and preach the gospel to the people. Well the operation did not take place; the doctors were amazed, they could not understand it. The boy did not fully understand himself, but he does now…for you see; I was that boy! I know that it was by the faith of my parents and by the faith of this patriarch that I was healed of this disease…
\nMoroni was honored with his time in responding to requests from friends and relatives to speak at funerals of their loved ones. He died on June 6, 1953.
\nFrom his personal journals, that he started writing in 1894, have been gleaned varied entries that are of interest to his descendants. They are added to his life story so that his family may treasure a few of his thoughts and experiences.
\n9 Oct 1894 (Book 1 p.2)…was set apart…by the mouth of Apostle John Henry Smith (for a mission to New Zealand).
\n10 Oct 1894 (Book 1 p.2) I received my endowments in the house of the Lord. In order to more thoroughly impress it upon my mind, I went through two days more to aid a friend in some work for the dead.
\n13 Oct 1894 (Book 1 p.3)…At 2 p.m. we again took train for San Francisco where we arrived some 31 hours later. I have spent nights upon the open prairie without food, fire or bedding. I have spent others with only my saddle blankets, but never in my life before have I spent as miserable nights as I did in the cars between Salt Lake City and San Francisco.
\n16 Oct 1894 (Book 1 p.4)…In my observation it appeared to me as though the chief occupation of the inhabitants (of San Francisco) was smoking cigars and drinking whiskey.
\n18 Oct 1894 (Book 1 p.5-6)… I think Honolulu is the most beautiful place I was ever in. It is curiously laid off. There appears to be no particular plan to go by. But every residence and business house seems to have been placed just where the proprietor wished to put it. This gives it somewhat of a rambling romantic appearance, which to me was quite interesting.
\n27 Oct 1894 (Book 1 p.6) The sea continues to roll and so does my stomach.
\n30 Oct 1894 (Book 1 p.7)… While in Apia (Samoa) we purchased some oranges and pineapple to eat on the way. But when we thought to eat them we found them as green as the ones that purchased them and so of course was not fit to eat. But you can’t fool me on green oranges again.
\n9 Nov 1894 (Book 1 p.8) We attended a meeting in a private residence (New Zealand) and was called upon to address the same. I occupied about 1 1/2 minutes. This was my first sermon delivered in a foreign land.
\n\n18 Nov 1894 (Book 1 p.10)…Bro. Folkman has a boil on the part of his person that he can’t see which makes it very painful to ride in the saddle.
\n6 Feb 1895 (Book 1 p.43)…And were taken in by the natives who gave us a place to sleep, but said it was too late to get us any supper, so we had to go to bed without.
\n10 Nov 1895 (Book 1 p.169-170)…After dinner we went to the river and baptized a fine little boy of eleven years. I officiated. Twas a beautiful place in the calm water beneath the leafy branches of a wide spreading tree, and here in this beautiful spot was a child born into the kingdom of God.
\n\nIn the fall of 1898 (Book 3 p.113) I took Rosa May Stewart to the Manti Temple and was married Oct 14, 1898 by J.D.T. McAlaster. We were also accompanied by Joseph Hutchinson and Mary Mortensen who were also married on the same day.
\nMon Oct 29 1900 (Book 4 p.35) Mother gradually grew worse…Her breathing became very difficult. We administered to her saying “Thy will be done.” Fifteen minutes later she peacefully fell asleep surrounded by her sorrowing family…God help us all to live that we may meet our angel mother again where partings are not known and where grim death never comes.
\n(Grover) Weds July 14, 1902 (Book 4 p.100) Hauled hay until noon when we were stopped by rain. While we were eating dinner Wallace got the cork out of a fly killer and got some of the poison which quickly began to work its deadly inroads on his system but by the blessing of the Lord he was healed through the power of administration to God the honor is due. As soon as I had administered to him the pain with which he was suffering took hold of me and made me quite ill for a time.
\n2 Apr 1912 (Book 5 p.56) I again did work for the dead this time for Mere Utuku, thus opening the way for their more efficient ministry on the other side and also paying in part the debt of gratitude due them for their kindness to me while I was a wanderer in a foreign land.
\n16 Nov 1913 (Book 5 p.72) I went to Fremont and got Mart Behunin to herd sheep. W.S. McClellan took JRS (John R. Steward) and myself in his automobile which was the first time I ever rode in one.
\n30 Nov 1915 Thanksgiving Day I got my car and hauled some old people to the program at the tabernacle..
\n28 Feb 1914 (Book 5 p.78) Priesthood Meeting and High Council Meeting. The High Council was put under covenant in regard to tithing and the word of wisdom preparatory to a general straightening out among the officers, Stake and Ward.
\n\n3 Apr 1915 (Book 5 p.91) Drove over to Salina where we left the team and took the train. When I arrived at Manti there I was met by Sister Annie Lowry who told me my father had a stroke that morning. I hurried up to his home and found him an object of pity, being unable to speak or move his right side. He was perfectly conscious of everything. We got him to bed and sent for the Elders to administer to him. I felt that he had come to the end of the road. Dr. Olstean waited on him and he gave us no hope… 5 Apr 1914 (Walter and Bertha came on the noon train.)
\n6 Apr 1915 Stayed by Father again all night. He was in considerable pain all afternoon. Sarah came about 10 p.m. he knew her although he was sinking fast and at 12:27 o’clock a.m. he passed away.
\n8 Apr 1915 Held a funeral service and then put the body on the train and started for home.
\n10 Apr 1915 The funeral was held at Loa at 11 a.m. There was a good turnout and many kind things were said of my father by the speakers. Then we laid him to rest in the grave beside my mother. And so passed away another one of the noble sons of the earth.
\n18 Nov 1916 (Book 5 p. 111) Loaded up potatoes and started home (from Grover.) Just before we reached Teasdale we stopped. I went some distance from the wagon. Rosa went to get out, when the team started, she was thrown under the wagon and the hind wheel passed over her body. I ran and raised her up. I thought her fatally injured. I got her into the wagon and drove to Teasdale. Got John Kiskey to bring us home in his car. Had the Dr. examine her, he thought her not seriously injured but could not tell. I watched her all night. She suffered much in her back.
\n19 Nov 1916 Rosa still very bad. Dr. thinks she will recover. I am thankful.
\n23 Apr 1917 (Book 5 p.118-119) Took Rosa, May, Arthur, Leslie, Koa and Bertha over to the Sevier River in our move from Wayne (Co.), stayed with Sarah (Miller, my sister) in Venice.
\n24 Apr 1917 Took Rosa to look at the farm. Left them at Vermillion…and returned to Loa.
\n25 Apr 1917 Loaded up the furniture to take to the Sevier. 26 Apr 1917 Started for the Sevier. I drove one team and Wallace the other. We camped at Grass Valley.
\n28 Jan 1921 (Book 5 p.121) There was a special stake priesthood meeting held at Richfield at which Apostle’s George F. Richards and Richard Lyman were present. Plans were submitted for the dividing of the Sevier Stake into 3 stakes. I was sorry to learn of the contemplated division because we would lose R.D. Young as our Pres. I had formed a great liking for him and did not want a change.
\n29 Jan 1921 I was much surprised during the early afternoon to be called to the phone and to have Apostle Richards tell me they would call on me at the hour of 4 p.m. They came and notified me that I had been chosen as the President of the North Sevier Stake.
\n20 Apr 1924 I was sustained as Patriarch of the Stake.
\n29 Apr 1924…to assist Wallace in starting away on his mission.
\n30 Apr 1924 Took Wallace to Salina where we bade him farewell.
\n6 Nov 1925 Moved to town.
\n14 June 1946 (Book 9 p. 181) This is Rosa’s birthday. She is 66. Getting old but is more precious to me all the time
\n25 Jan 1945 (Book 9 p.208) Rosa went to the city. The house is not home with Rosa gone. I spent the day roaming around.
\n21 Oct 1948 (Book 9 p. 176-B) on the 14th we celebrated our Golden wedding. The children were all here and went through the Temple in the forenoon. Then we had a feast…Some of the children were baptized in all there were 17 of the family in the temple. We had a wonderful time and we were sure thrilled. It was something to think about that all our family and in laws were able to get recommends to the Temple. We think they are a pretty clean bunch of kids.
\n11 Dec 1948 (Book 9 p.179-B)…We are comfortable in our home and very thankful for health and comfort, the Lord is good to us and we appreciate it. Rosa’s health is improved and we are very thankful for it.
\n31 Dec 1951 (Book 9 p.260) The last day of the year, it has passed very rapidly, the world is in a very precarious condition, as the prophets have told since the days of long ago. The future looks very dark. But the Lord is at the helm and if we do as we have been advised we need not fear.
\n12 Jan 1952 (Book 9 p.261) My birthday, I am 80 years old, feeling fine…
\n13 Jan 1952 Leslie went to Priesthood Meeting and S.S. Others of the family came to honor my natal day…We had a nice dinner and a very enjoyable time. They all returned home about 4 p.m. Just as they had all left the place a blizzard came up which gave us great anxiety for their safety…I was very much worried for their safety and made it a matter of earnest prayer. Finally I asked the Lord to give me some assurance that they were safe. After my third prayer I went to the green house to check on things. As I came out of the temple the sky was cloudy as it had been since the storm started. I was fearful that they might find the road drifted full of snow. About 15 min later as I came out of the green house to return to the temple I was amazed to see the sky was mostly free from clouds and the blue sky showing over most of it. I took it as an answer to my prayer and felt so much comforted and assured. A few hours later it closed in again and stormed most of the night.
\nAfter his death, 6 June 1953, the following thoughts were recorded in his journal by his devoted wife, Rosa May, as she attempted to complete his record for their posterity.
\nImpressions of Brother Lazenby as we remember him from Mrs. O. A. Penrod and Melba Allen:
\nHe was always helping others in their troubles. We know that he was an instrument in the hands of our Father in Heaven in healing many broken hearts and in restoring health to many who sought him for blessings in their hours of bereavement, illness and need.
\nWe appreciate the wonderful blessings that came into our lives through his administrations. We first remember him as night watchman at the temple before we came to know him better and love him and appreciate his friendship. We shall miss him at the temple and will always cherish many happy memories of our association with him. We know that he gave many wonderful patriarchal and comforting blessings. He had a great humanitarian heart, his days and energies and efforts were spent in encouraging others to live more happily and to prepare themselves to rise to a glorious resurrection. Having lost his life in the service of others and in our Heavenly Father’s work, we feel that he will be counted worthy of just such a glorious resurrection as he desired for others.
\nNo one can estimate the number he has helped or the influence for good that he gave. He was sensitive to the promptings of our Heavenly Father. He was one of those men in whom faith in things not seen, comes very close to certain knowledge. Yes his testimony of the Gospel was surely an inspiration to young and old…

\nA TRIBUTE TO THE LIFE OF BROTHER MORONI LAZENBY
\nDown the pathway of life they started
\nA man and a maiden fair;
\nIt was a beautiful path full of roses,
\nWithout any doubt or cares.
\nArm in arm they traveled–partners–
\nAlong the broad highway,
\nThe sun shone brightly and the birds
\nSang sweeter every day.
\nThen they came to an uneven pathway;
\nThat proved difficult to tread,
\nMaking them more dependent upon
\nThe star of love overhead.
\nSometimes they grew tired and weary,
\nOft-times a little bit sad;
\nFeeling doubts, they wondered if enough
\nFaith and courage they had.
\nTo meet the problems and worries
\nOf raising their family;
\nOf the daily tasks of livin
\nWith the promise of joy to be.
\nBut each time their load seemed heavy,
\nTheir love for each other grew,
\nAnd they sought their Heavenly Father

\nHe saw when their hearts knew grief

\nThere was no call that came to them,
\nThat they did not believe
\nThat God had found them worthy
\nAnd anxious to receive.
\nThey ministered to all who came
\nWithin their loving care
\nThe poor, the sick, the sorrowing ones

\nThat Brother and Sister Lazenby
\nBlessed them in many a way.

\nHe called on them to be,
\nTrue saviors in His faithful flock,

\nMany precious years they labored
\nWithin the hallowed walls
\nOf Manti Temple, where they knew
\nThe supreme joy that falls.
\nOn those who dedicate their lives
\nUnto the master’s cause.
\nThey served with love and sacrifice
\nAnd taught God’s holy laws.
\nA sweet peace sanctified their hearts
\nA greater joy they knew;
\nTheir sphere of touching lives for good
\nIn vast proportion grew.
\nThen illness came, its dreadful hand
\nFore-shadowed darker days,
\nTheir temple work came to an end
\nAnd they walked in different ways.
\nBut still together arm in arm,
\nAs in the days of yore;
\nThey found they’d journeyed side by side
\nFor fifty years and more.
\nBut now today, at last has come
\nThe parting of their ways,
\nFor Brother Lazenby has gone on
\nTo meet his friends of former days.
\nTo see his Savior and his God.
\nWho greeted him we’re sure
\nWith out-stretched loving arms and words
\nOf “Welcome home” once more.
\nTheir separation will be brief,
\nFor mortal years fly by;
\nAnd Sister Lazenby knows that he
\nWill be waiting there on High.
\nThe loving ties they forged on earth
\nWill draw them to each other,
\nAnd there, someday, they’ll meet again
