- And after they had been received unto baptism, and were wrought upon and a by the power of the Holy Ghost, they were numbered among the people of the b of Christ; and their c were taken, that they might be remembered and nourished by the good word of God, to keep them in the right way, to keep them continually d unto prayer, e alone upon the merits of Christ, who was the author and the finisher of their faith.
- “Missionary work is a blessed burden that comes with Church membership, an assignment from the Lord that comes through being ordained to the priesthood. As member-missionaries we do not require special settings apart, for we have already been confirmed and ordained. We have the Spirit, and we have the power. What more do we need?” (Men of Influence, 13)
- “Above all else we can live the gospel. Surely there is no more powerful missionary message we can send to this world than the example of a loving and happy Latter-day Saint life. The manner and bearing, the smile and kindness of a faithful member of the Church brings a wrmth and an outreach which no missionary tract or videotape can convey. People do not join the Church because of what they know. They join because of what they feel, what they see and want spiritually. Our sprit of testimony and happiness in that regard will come through to others if we let it” (Jeffrey R. Holland, Ensign, May 2001, 14)
- “If the missionaries do it alone, they will knock on doors day after day and the harvest will be meager. Or as members we can assist them in finding and teaching investigators…Brothers and Sisters, all of you out in the wards and stakes and in the districts and branches, I invite you to become a vast army with enthusiasm for this work and a great overarching desire to…carry the gospel to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people” (Gordon B. Hinckley, Ensign, May 1999, 107, 110)
- “How often do we hear well-meaning members of the church pray, “We ask thee to bless our missionaries throughout the world. Lead them to the doors of the honest in heart.” Such a prayer seeks to excuse us from joining in the labor. In 1976 Elder Bruce R. McConkie wisely observed tha a prayer ‘places the responsibility for missionary work upon a handufl of missionaries. How much better it would be if all members of the Church assumed their full responsibility to do missionary work and said instead, ‘We are so grateful for these…missionaries. We want them to help us convert our contacts to the Church.’ Nobody helps the missionaries; rather, missionaries help all of us” (Let Every Man, 5) When we pray for our missionaries, it would be well to add, “and bless us with the strength and the desire to help them.” (Men of Influence, 19-20)
- “God is able to do his own work (2 Nephi 27:20), but thankfully he has commissioned and called us, the bearers of his holy priesthood, to assit him- to stand up, to speak out, to be unhesitant to share our pearl of great price, to be a powerful influence for good. “Look unto me in every thought,” he implores, “doubt not, fear not” (D&C 6:36). Be assured, God is our partner and in his strength we will not fail.” (Men of Influence, 22)
- “If the Latter-day Saints think, when the Kingdom of God (Government under God’s law) is established on the earth, that all the inhabitants of the earth will join the church called Latter-day Saints, they are egregiously mistaken. I presume there will be as many sects and parties then as now.” (Brigham Young) The genius of God’s law is that everyone is treated with respect and their rights are protected. As an epistle from the Quorum of the Twelve clearly stated in 1847: “The Kingdom of God consists in correct principles; and it mattereth not what a man’s religious faith is; whether he be a Presbyterian, or a Methodist, or a Baptist, or a Latter-day Saint…or a Catholic or Episcopalian…if he will bow the knee and with his tongue confess that Jesus is the Christ, and will support good and wholesome laws for the regulation of society- we hail him as a brother….” The Cleansing of America, Skousen, Page 30.
- “We can be reasonably active, meeting-going Latter-day Saints, but if we do not live lives of gospel integrity and convey to our children powerful, heartfelt convictions regarding the truthfulness of the Restoration and the divine guidance of the Church from the First Vision to this very hour, then those children may, to our regret but not surprise, turn out not to be visibly active, meeting-going Latter-day Saints or sometimes anything close to it.” Broken Things to Mend (Jeffrey R. Holland) Kindle Loc. 165-68
- … And in fine, wo unto all those who tremble, and are angry because of the truth of God! For behold, he that is built upon the rock receiveth it with gladness; and he that is built upon a sandy foundation trembleth lest he shall fall.
- “President Gordon B. Hinckley often called on us to hold our people close to the Church, especially the newly converted member. In issuing this call, he reminded us that we all need at least three things to remain firmly in the faith: a friend, a responsibility, and “[nourishing] by the good word of God” ().” Broken Things to Mend (Jeffrey R. Holland) Kindle Loc. 508-10
- “”Effective teaching is the very essence of leadership in the Church. Eternal life,” President Hinckley continued, “will come only as men and women are taught with such effectiveness that they change and discipline their lives. They cannot be coerced into righteousness or into heaven. They must be led, and that means teaching.”” Broken Things to Mend (Jeffrey R. Holland) Kindle Loc. 535-37
- “As President Gordon B. Hinckley once said in a Churchwide broadcast: “My heart reaches out to you missionaries. You simply cannot do it alone and do it well. You must have the help of others. That power to help lies within each of us. . . . “Now, my brethren and sisters, we can let the missionaries try to do it alone, or we can help them. If they do it alone, they will knock on doors day after day and the harvest will be meager. Or as members we can assist them in finding and teaching investigators. . . . “Brothers and sisters, all of you out in the wards and stakes and in the districts and branches, I invite you to become a vast army with enthusiasm for this work and a great overarching desire to assist the missionaries in the tremendous responsibility they have to carry the gospel to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people.”” Broken Things to Mend(Jeffrey R. Holland) Kindle Loc. 678-84
- “President Gordon B. Hinckley taught: “We of this generation are the end harvest of all that has gone before. It is not enough to simply be known as a member of this Church. A solemn obligation rests upon us. Let us face it and work at it. “We must live as true followers of the Christ, with charity toward all, returning good for evil, teaching by example the ways of the Lord, and accomplishing the vast service He has outlined for us. “May we live worthy of the glorious endowment of light and understanding and eternal truth which has come to us through all the perils of the past. Somehow, among all who have walked the earth, we have been brought forth in this unique and remarkable season. Be grateful, and above all be faithful.”” Broken Things to Mend (Jeffrey R. Holland) Kindle Loc. 831-36
- “It’s hard enough to make changes when we want to, but to try to make someone else change when he or she doesn’t want to is impossible, and it can ruin a good friendship.” You Can Heal Your Life (Louise Hay) Page 56
- “For nearly six thousand years, God has held you in reserve to make your appearance in the final days before the Second Coming of the Lord. Every previous gospel dispensation has drifted into apostasy, but ours will not… God has saved for the final inning some of his strongest children, who will help bear off the Kingdom triumphantly. And that is where you come in, for you are the generation that must be prepared to meet your God. All through the ages the prophets have looked down through the corridors of time to our day. Billions of the deceased and those yet to be born have their eyes on us. Make no mistake about it – you are a marked generation. There has never been more expected of the faithful in such a short period of time as there is of us. Never before on the face of this earth have the forces of evil and the forces of good been as well organized…. …Each day we personally make many decisions that show where our support will go. The final outcome is certain – the forces of righteousness will finally win. What remains to be seen is where each of us personally, now and in the future, will stand in this fight – and how tall we will stand. Will we be true to our last-days, foreordained mission?” (Ezra Taft Benson, “In His Steps,” Speeches of the Year 1979, 59-60)
- … ”the first years of Church correlation were concerned largely with organization, with programs, with procedures, with committees, and councils and boards. It centered on planning. Now with perilous days upon us, we must implement those plans. Providentially, we are prepared at least to a degree, to energize the consummate power of the holy priesthood to protect and perfect the saints and bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man. The announcement of the mission of the Church with its three dimensions moved us toward another kind of correlation beyond the correlation of programs and procedures . It has more to do with implementation than with planning. This is a correlation of spirit, of attitude. This correlation is in the mind, in the heart, in the very soul. It is in this spirit of correlation and unity that we now pray that you will adopt. We urge you now to concentrate on the mission of the Church rather than to merely manage organizations and programs.”Elder Boyd K Packer Regional Representatives Conf April 3, 1987, From President Albert Farnsworth, Mission President of Ecuador Quito from 1993 to 1996.
- “We live in that day which John the Revelator foresaw when “the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.” ( Rev. 12:17.) The dragon is Satan; the woman represents the Church of Jesus Christ. Satan is waging war against the members of the Church who have testimonies and are trying to keep the commandments. And while many of our members are remaining faithful and strong, some are wavering. Some are falling. Some are fulfilling John’s prophecy that in the war with Satan, some Saints would be overcome. - Mosiah 7: 29… For behold, the Lord hath said: I will not succor my people in the day of their transgression; but I will hedge up their ways that they prosper not; and their doings shall be as a stumbling block before them.
- “Whenever the adversary cannot persuade imperfect yet striving Saints such as you to abandon your belief in a personal and loving God, he employs a vicious campaign to put as much distance as possible between you and God. The adversary knows that faith in Christ—the kind of faith that produces a steady stream of tender mercies and even mighty miracles—goes hand in hand with a personal confidence that you are striving to choose the right. For that reason he will seek access to your heart to tell you lies—lies that Heavenly Father is disappointed in you, that the Atonement is beyond your reach, that there is no point in even trying, that everyone else is better than you, that you are unworthy, and a thousand variations of that same evil theme.” Jörg Klebingat, October 2014 General Conference
- Moroni 7:3 -5 …Wherefore, I would speak unto you that are of the church, that are the peaceable followers of Christ, and that have obtained a sufficient hope by which ye can enter into the rest of the Lord, from this time henceforth until ye shall rest with him in heaven. 4 And now my brethren, I judge these things of you because of your peaceable walk with the children of men. 5 For I remember the word of God which saith by their works ye shall know them; for if their works be good, then they are good also
- 2 Nephi 28:28… And in fine, wo unto all those who tremble, and are angry because of the truth of God! For behold, he that is built upon the rock receiveth it with gladness; and he that is built upon a sandy foundation trembleth lest he shall fall.
- Jacob 2:31 -33…31 For behold, I, the Lord, have seen the sorrow, and heard the mourning of the daughters of my people in the land of Jerusalem, yea, and in all the lands of my people, because of the wickedness and abominations of their husbands. 32 And I will not suffer, saith the Lord of Hosts, that the cries of the fair daughters of this people, which I have led out of the land of Jerusalem, shall come up unto me against the men of my people, saith the Lord of Hosts. 33 For they shall not lead away captive the daughters of my people because of their tenderness, save I shall visit them with a sore curse, even unto destruction; for they shall not commit whoredoms, like unto them of old, saith the Lord of Hosts.
- Jacob 6: 59… They are, however, to warn, expound, exhort, and teach, and invite all to come unto Christ.
- D&C 20: 4… And after they had been received unto baptism, and were wrought upon and cleansed by the power of the Holy Ghost, they were numbered among the people of the church of Christ; and their names were taken, that they might be remembered and nourished by the good word of God, to keep them in the right way, to keep them continually watchful unto prayer, relying alone upon the merits of Christ, who was the author and the finisher of their faith.
- Ephesians 4: 11-13…The Lord organized his church with apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, teachers to perfect the saints, work of the ministry, and edifying of the body of Christ so that members can come in the unity of faith, knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.
- “Nonetheless, Russell adored his parents, Marion Clavar Nelson and Floss Edna Anderson Nelson. “My Mother and Father were just so wonderful,” he said. “Every night was family home evening. Daddy may have been smoking a cigar, but it was family home evening nonetheless.” Insight’s from a Prophet’s Life, Russell M. Nelson, Page 3
- “There’s a natural tendency in most of us to compare ourselves with other people, to say things like, “I wish I was as good as Becky” or “I feel like I’m trying my best to live the gospel, but I’m not even in the same spiritual ballpark with Charles.” We must keep in mind always that our Heavenly Father does not grade on a curve. He does not and will not compare his children in terms of their individual righteousness or sinfulness.” Coming to Know Christ, Robert L. Millet
- “In the Church especially, asking produces better results than ordering better feeling, too. Remember to tell why. Follow up to see how things are going. Show appreciation when people carry out instructions well. Express confidence when it can be done honestly. When something gets fouled up, it is well to check back and find out where you slipped up and don’t be afraid to admit that you did. Remember, our people are voluntary, free-will workers. They also love the Lord and His work. Love them. Appreciate them. When you are tempted to reprimand a fellow worker, don’t. Try an interesting challenge and a pat on the back instead. Our Father’s children throughout the world are essentially good. He loves them. We should also. People do not like to be forced to do anything, even if it is for their own good. But people do respond to effective leadership.” Manual, Teachings of the President of the Church: Ezra Taft Benson, Chapter 19, Leadership
