  • “There are two influences in the world today and have been from the beginning. One is an influence that is constructive, that radiates happiness and that builds character. The other influence is one that destroys, turns men into demons, tears down and discourages. We are all susceptible to both. The one comes from our Heavenly Father and the other comes from the source of evil that has been in the world from the beginning seeking to bring about the destruction of the human family.  We will all be tempted; no man is free from temptation. The adversary will use every means possible to deceive us; he tried to do that with the Savior of the world without success. He has tried it on many other men who have possessed divine authority….” Teachings of Presidents of the Church: George Albert Smith, Chapter 18: Stay on the Lord’s Side of the Line
  • “Shortly before President Heber J. Grant passed away, one of the Brethren visited his home. Before he left, President Grant prayed, “O God, bless me that I shall not lose my testimony and keep faithful to the end!” 1 After nearly 27 years as President of the Church, this was his fervent prayer. His example is a striking reminder that no one, at any age, is immune from Satan’s influence.”  Kevin W. Pearson, April 2015 General Conference
  • “We live in that day which John the Revelator foresaw when “the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.” (Rev. 12:17.) The dragon is Satan; the woman represents the Church of Jesus Christ. Satan is waging war against the members of the Church who have testimonies and are trying to keep the commandments. And while many of our members are remaining faithful and strong, some are wavering. Some are falling. Some are fulfilling John’s prophecy that in the war with Satan, some Saints would be overcome. (See Rev. 13:7.) Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Ezra Taft Benson, (2014), 114–24
  • “Satan is known as the great deceiver. His religion, his philosophy, and his work is based on deception and lies. His objective is to thwart the work of the Lord by misleading us and eventually making us “miserable like unto himself” (2 Ne. 2:27 ). Richard C. Edgley, October 1999 General Conference
  • 3 Nephi 18:18 -20…18  Behold, verily, verily, I say unto you, ye must watch and pray always lest ye enter into temptation; for Satan desireth to have you, that he may sift you as wheat. 19 Therefore ye must always pray unto the Father in my name; 20 And whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, which is right, believing that ye shall receive, behold it shall be given unto you.
  • “Whenever the adversary cannot persuade imperfect yet striving Saints such as you to abandon your belief in a personal and loving God, he employs a vicious campaign to put as much distance as possible between you and God. The adversary knows that faith in Christ—the kind of faith that produces a steady stream of tender mercies and even mighty miracles—goes hand in hand with a personal confidence that you are striving to choose the right. For that reason he will seek access to your heart to tell you lies—lies that Heavenly Father is disappointed in you, that the Atonement is beyond your reach, that there is no point in even trying, that everyone else is better than you, that you are unworthy, and a thousand variations of that same evil theme.” Jörg Klebingat, October 2014 General Conference
  • Pearl of Great Price, Moses, Chapter 4:3… Wherefore, because that Satan rebelled against me, and sought to destroy the agency of man, which I, the Lord God, had given him, and also, that I should give unto him mine own power; by the power of mine Only Begotten, I caused that he should be cast down;
  • “I have heard very fearful and even dismal opinions coming from some in your age group regarding the questions that missionary had in mind. I have heard some of you say that you wonder whether there is any purpose in going on a mission or getting an education or planning for a career if the world we live in is going to be so uncertain. I have even heard sweethearts say, “We don’t know whether we should get married in such uncertain times.” Worst of all, I have heard reports of some newlyweds questioning whether they should bring children into a terror-filled world on the brink of latter-day cataclysms. May I tell you that, in a way, those kinds of attitudes worry me more than Al-Qaeda worries me. We must never, in any age or circumstance, let fear and the father of fear (Satan himself) divert us from our faith and faithful living. There have always been questions about the future. Every young person and every young couple in every era has had to walk by faith into what has always been some uncertainty—starting with Adam and Eve in those first tremulous steps out of the Garden of Eden. But that is all right. This is the plan. It will be okay. Just be faithful. God is in charge. He knows your name and He knows your need.” Broken Things to Mend (Jeffrey R. Holland) Kindle Loc. 778-87

  • “ September 20th, 1994 – Tuesday….Today was a learning experience.  I woke up feeling super empty. I felt homesick, I felt like crying & very weird & confused.  After 2 ½ months of feeling the Spirit I know when it isn’t with me. And this morning it wasn’t.  I tried to push it back & just get to work. We visited a few members and gave a charla for New Members to a young girl. It went well. We came home & on the way home Elder Salazar mentioned that he felt the same way (empty, no enthusiasm). We got into the house & it was super strong. I could feel it was Satan. So we prayed and cast Satan out of our presence. We ate at the Mamitas, then went & visited some inactives (we invited them to church). We then ran into an old man who had been walking since morning looking for his son. His son never visited him so he took a cab to a part of Puyo, and then walked since morning. We bought him a soda & sat him down in the shade. We walked him until we found out where his son lived. His grandson came & got him. I felt so good serving this man.   I felt like a peculiar person because of taking time to serve him. A lot of people looked at us like we were wasting our time but we weren’t. We were serving this helpless old man who could barely walk. The poor man was tired & it was hot. I wanted to carry him but figured that would be a little uncomfortable for us both.  After serving this man I had the Spirit back with me in a snap. I’ve learned that Service will bring the true love of Christ at any time!”- Missionary Journal of Clinton Brown
  •  March 12th, 1995 – Sunday.  Quito, Ecuador …”Tonight Elder Norris started telling us an experience he had with the Sons of Perdition. A little girl was possessed with 6 demons and was talking with their voices. They had a baptism where Satand did all that he could to impede it. I won’t go into details just write a few parts. The demons talked with the missionaries. The demons said that they knew each and every one of the missionaries. They knew them from the grand council in heaven.  They said a few things that made some missionaries mad, and what they said they could have only said if they knew them. The demons couldn’t leave with the power of the Priesthood that these Elders had because the sister of the girl possessed, She was playing the Ouija board and making contracts with Satan. Well, the Elders had a lot more scary experiences, even to the point where twice Elder Constantine was almost stabbed (by a knife & screwdriver) by the sister who was playing the Ouija board.” – Clinton Brown Missionary Journal
  •  March 12th, 1995 – Sunday.  Quito, Ecuador …”Satan and his angels blind us, confuse us, and give us a feeling of emptiness. The air around us feels dry and creepy, and Satan tries to give you feelings of comfort. Bologna! The Spirit on the other hand is the opposite. A feeling of surety, of comfort, and of love. When you’re in a room, you don’t feel alone but you have no worries or confusion.”  – Clinton Brown Missionary Journal
  • March 12th, 1995 – Sunday. Quito, Ecuador …”I need to focus 100% on my mission on earth. It’s so urgent. I’ve had a few experiences that I now realize were Satan.  At Ricks College, more at the time when I had sent in my papers for the mission, I would take a lot of naps. Baseball would tire me out. During these naps I would have horrible dreams, with me fighting Satan (himself) in my dreams. He was such an ugly figure and screamed and looked like a Beast. I would try to wake up from my sleep, but at times couldn’t. I would be awake mentally, but I just couldn’t open my eyes or talk. It was as if someone was holding my tongue. I would try calling Leroy or Jeremy Bowman but I just couldn’t. When I finally would wake up I would be so tired I would fall right back to sleep and repeat the whole pattern. At the time I had these same “Evil” feelings around me but I ignored them.  Now I know that it was Satan. He is for real, and didn’t want me on my mission.”  – Clinton Brown Missionary Journal
  • March 12th, 1995 – Sunday. Quito, Ecuador …”If I’m going to have an encounter with Satan, I need to be prepared. The spiritual war is still going on. When we sin, Satan wins that battle, when we decide not to, and we find the escape route (1 Corinthians 10:13) then the Lord (us) we win the battle. Satan won’t win the war, that’s a given.  It’s up to us individually to win these battles. These battles don’t affect the Lord or his “victory” he will have over Satan, but rather these battles are for the salvation of each person. We need to win these battles, and save ourselves so we’re on the Lord’s side.” – Clinton Brown Missionary Journal

  • December 11th, 1994 – Sunday – 5:30pm. Puyo Ecuador….Wow. Today in the chapel I’ve never felt like this before. Man, the spirit was not there. People were arguing, teaching false doctrine and being noisy, rowdy, etc. After church, members were asking if the meeting could be cut from 3 to 2 hours. They were arguing over an activity. Man, I realized how hard Satan is working on Puyo. I think that today’s dedication in Pelileo had to do with it. Satan’s angels saw they couldn’t be this chapel in Pelileo so they all came here to Puyo.” – Clinton Brown Missionary Journal

And that is one of our difficulties.” Teachings of Presidents of the Church: George Albert Smith, 2010, Page 11

  • December 19, 1995 – Tuesday – Quito Ecuador… “I then spoke with President Farnsworth about the situation that we have in Santa Ana, how much Satan is working, and how we aren’t sure who has the blame, if we’re doing something wrong, etc.  President said a lot of nice things to me.  He told me that there hasn’t been on Z.L. who has had success there because Satan works so hard and the members don’t support.  He told me that this is why I was there, to beat Satan.  He told me that Satan was going to work even harder, and that as we keep doing our part we’ll beat him.  President always knows how to hype me up.” – Clinton Brown Missionary Journal
  • December 20, 1995 – Wednesday – Quito Ecuador… “Wow.  Great day.  We taught 8 second charlas today and we committed 4 to be baptized.  We’re going to commit the other 4 ya mismo.  I’m really seeing the positive side of things.  When Satan does something, or something fails, I can recognize it, think, and do the best of the situation.  Many times the citas are stood up, so we think of another option – nada, and then another – nada – but we always find someone in the road, or by their house so that we make contact, or take out the referral.  The Lord really does guide us to do the things that he wants us to do.  I know this is His work, and no one elses.  I love being here.  It’s so important to be worthy of the Spirit.  If not – no success.” – Clinton Brown Missionary Journal
  • December 28, 1995 – Thursday – Quito Ecuador… “A lot of appointments dogged us today.  Satan was trying to deanimarnos (discourage us).  But he can’t.  THis morning we had Zone Study.  Our Zone is sweet.  We have a lot of fun together.  Elder Herrera and I walked all over the place today.  We had 3 charlas.  Yesterday we had 6.  Yesterday, during the Joseph Smith principle at the Bustamante’s house, the Spirit was so strong. It was in  my whole body testifying that Joseph Smith is a true prophet.  I have no doubt of that!!! We committed Marcelo Sifuentes and Mirian Zambrano to be baptized on the 7th of January.  They’re neat people, and will be baptized.  I love this work.  At times I’m so tired, or want to give up, but no way.  It’s like the 4th Quarter.  Bear down and get ‘em.  Before the mission I was worried because I had no excitement for the church.  It was all Sports!  I could get hyped up for Sports but not church.  I prayed a lot during high school that the Lord would convert my excitement for Sports to excitement to Spread the Gospel.  I tell you what, the Lord has answered my prayers.  My adrenaline gets flowing to leave the house, hunt down the chosen, teach with the Spirit, and help people progress.  I love it when the other team – Satan – tries to impede us or beat us.  I get pumped to find out how to beat him.” – Clinton Brown Missionary Journal
  • May 17, 1995 – Wednesday – Quito, Ecuador… “We took off to Chillogallo in an evil bus. The bus driver about killed us trying to race a bus alongside. Not too intelligent. Well, we got off the bus, and the roundabout was full of big time confusion. Elder Hanks & I were confused but decided to keep going to Hermano Baez’ house. We started going down an alley (one of the most dangerous) and we felt like we were going to get jumped or robbed. We just didn’t feel too good. So Hanks said he had the feeling to just go home – Quick!  So we took off quickly. I saw a members house & thought that it’d be smart to grab my keys that I had left there last week.  So we head up there, and in their house was…..Hermano Baez. Also an inactive Stud that should be a big leader in the church.  Hanks & I knew that we were guided to this house, 1st of all to find Hermano Baez, & 2nd of all….we still don’t know.  We tried helping the inactive to commit to go to church, but we couldn’t.  We kind of felt we were sent there to change the inactives life, but we didn’t seem to had done it. So we felt as if we failed. All I know is that we were guided to that house by the Holy Ghost for some reason. I don’t know if we will ever know why. Maybe we wouldn’t be hurt going to Baez’ house. Who knows. We did take out a reference from the Taxi driver on the way home. Maybe we were lead there.  The Lord works in mysterious ways.” –  Clinton Brown Missionary Journal
  • February 13, 1996 – Tuesday – Quito Ecuador… “About the comment that Elder Ponciano will push Satan out – Satan testified of it today. We were eating some bread & chocolate milk, sitting on a curb. There was a drunk across the street yelling at us, & trying to start something.  We just ignored him because it always happens. Well, the drunk grabbed a blade out of his sock and came after us!  We both grabbed our books, bread, etc & I went one way and Elder Ponciano the other. He followed Ponciano trying to stab him, but some guy grabbed him so he couldn’t.  We left like nothing happened. When we started meditating over the situation we both recalled feelings we had to not be where we were. We didn’t follow the Spirit & we were almost sliced. We need to learn to act on 1st promptings of the Spirit.” – Clinton Brown Missionary Journal
  • February 20, 1996 – Tuesday – Quito Ecuador… “Right now I’m a little shook up.  Emotionally wise.  Tonight we went to an FHE at the Melo’s house.  The Vallejos & Tipan families went with us.  The Spirit was so strong & great there.  We then arrived late to the Salas’ house.  I’m sure we’re testing their patience.  We started and Elder Ponciano started speaking on the importance of obeying parents, etc.  Lourdes then went off on Lorena, telling us how bad she was etc.  It was very uncomfortable.  No Spirit.  But the Spirit of contention.  We were there 1 ½ hours, and the two of them spoke.  Lorena finally spoke which is what she needed to do and Lourdes needed to do.  Elder Ponciano & I did our best, trying to help them openly talk and come to conclusions.  At the end, the Lord blessed us with such a strong spirit that it brought tears to our eyes.  We then left and as we were walking down the street a drunk came up to us, asking for $ for some beer.  Then an urgent feeling came over me saying to catch a Taxi & leave!!  About 3 or 4 Taxis came by.  The empty ones didn’t stop & I started getting scared.  The drunk was getting very upset because we didn’t cooperate.  We kept trying to walk and the drunk started to look around as if to see if there were people.  Well, I looked ahead and there was a Taxi backing up to us.  I was so happy because we were in a full on feeling of Satan.  We got in the Taxi (Ponciano got in back, entering from the other side) and the drunk wouldn’t allow us to shut the door.  I told the chofer to Go, so he did.  The Tax driver then told us that he saw us as he passed by.  He then went up the hill and came back down in front of us and then backed up.  He told us that the drunk was a robber, and that he had a knife on him.  We thanked the Taxi driver for stopping, paid him & left.  As I said, I’m shooken up.  1st of all because of what COULD’VE  happened if we didn’t have the Spirit with us, and to recognize the difference as the drunk came up.  2nd of all, Satan is trying so hard to kick us out of this sector.  He has done more things with us this past week that I see that he’s working intensely.  He has given us the creeps, etc, but he won’t send us out of here.  I know that we are here to kick him out of this sector and zone, and he’s fighting until the end.  Stan is testifying to me that Elder Ponciano is a valiant Spirit, that he’s going to be the one to finally overcome this sector.  That’s the goal.  Kick Satan out through hard work, obedience, studies, positive attitude, Love, Patience, diligence, and the Priesthood of God.  I love this work.” – Clinton Brown Missionary Journal
