- March 28, 1996 – Friday – Ambato Ecuador…”We then had a successful appointment with Angel Palma (Ward Mission Leader Miraflores Ward). Man, we’d have a lot more success if all men were in their citas. Well, we then left with Angel Palma and we were going up a steep, dirt slope. We passed a gate going up & it started to shake, & I heard a deep growl. I just figured it was another clueless dog, that was until the earth started shaking like crazy. Man, we headed up that dirt slope as fast as possible. I slipped a few times, and luckily there wasn’t a land slide. We got up top and an electric wire sparked. We calmed down a lady, and then the earthquake wasn’t as jerky. It still rocked but not so violently. We looked across the valley and there were landslides all over the other mountain. Later on we found out that a 4 year old girl was buried alive in her house form a landslide. We waited a bit longer, Angel headed back down to his house to see if all was OK. During these moment’s God let’s us remember who’s in charge. I need to be more obedient and obey God’s commands. Tonight there was a pretty strong aftershock. They say that the 1st one was 5.7 on the richter scale, and centered near the Cotopaxi Volcano. Not too good! I’m sure there’ll be more aftershocks. Tonight the Sisters Gillespie and Reyes did a good training for the missionaries of Pradera. The work is advancing and the Lord is doing His part. Waking us up!” – Clinton Brown Missionary Journal
