He didn’t relish the idea of lying and faking it, but he couldn’t figure out how to handle the situation any other way. The solutions it comes up with are often inelegant and primitive, but they are direct and effective (and usually involve pain of some kind). The solution Dr. Smith’s unconscious mind came up with was laryngitis. Prevention and protection came to the rescue. His croaky voice prevented him from having to give the presentation and protected him from the embarrassment of being a phony.
