  • “A plank in Smith’s political platform caught Quincy’s attention: “Smith recognized the curse and iniquity of slavery, though he opposed the methods of the Abolitionists.” He proposed to pay for the slaves with proceeds from the sale of public lands, thus respecting the rights of property while freeing all bondsmen. Quincy noted that eleven years later Ralph Waldo Emerson, “who has mixed so much practical shrewdness with his lofty philosophy,” had made the same proposal. Considering “the terrible cost of the fratricidal war,” Smith and Emerson’s proposal, in Quincy’s judgment, was “worthy of a Christian statesman.”Joseph Smith: Rough Stone Rolling.  (Bushman, Richard Lyman) Kindle Location 335-340.
  • “Quincy speculated that Smith’s influence would reach further still: It is by no means improbable that some future text-book, for the use of generations yet unborn, will contain a question something like this: What historical American of the nineteenth century has exerted the most powerful influence upon the destinies of his countrymen? And it is by no means impossible that the answer to the interrogatory may be thus written: Joseph Smith the Mormon prophet.”  Joseph Smith: Rough Stone Rolling (Bushman, Richard Lyman) Kindle Location 349-353.
  • Mosiah 8:13… 13  Now Ammon said unto him: I can assuredly tell thee, O king, of a man that can translate the records; for he has wherewith that he can look, and translate all records that are of ancient date; and it is a gift from God. And the things are called interpreters, and no man can look in them except he be commanded, lest he should look for that he ought not and he should perish. And whosoever is commanded to look in them, the same is called seer.

  • D&C 135:3… Joseph Smith, the Prophet and Seer of the Lord, has done more, save Jesus only, for the salvation of men in this world, than any other man that ever lived in it. In the short space of twenty years, he has brought forth the Book of Mormon, which he translated by the gift and power of God, and has been the means of publishing it on two continents; has sent the fulness of the everlasting gospel, which it contained, to the four quarters of the earth; has brought forth the revelations and commandments which compose this book of Doctrine and Covenants, and many other wise documents and instructions for the benefit of the children of men; gathered many thousands of the Latter-day Saints, founded a great city, and left a fame and name that cannot be slain. He lived great, and he died great in the eyes of God and his people; and like most of the Lord’s anointed in ancient times, has sealed his mission and his works with his own blood; and so has his brother Hyrum. In life they were not divided, and in death they were not separated!
  •  “October 27th, 1994 – Thursday. Puyo Ecuador...Today we were teaching Wilson and there was a guy hammering. When we were watching the 1st vision, it was close to the part of the vision and I knew it would touch him.  Also the people were getting rowdy. So I said a prayer in my mind and said In the name of Jesus for this man to stop hammering and for everything to be peaceful for the Vision part. 5 seconds later the man stopped hammering, the baby stopped crying and everyone paid attention to the video & was touched. Right after everything important was said in the video the noise started again. I know the Lord answers prayers. I realized a little bit that with faith and in the name of Jesus Christ I can do a lot of things. I also did the same for the Miranda family the 1st time we taught them. It was raining on their tin roof & we couldn’t hear the video. I prayed & it stopped raining. It started again after the video. I know Joseph Smith was a prophet. The Lord wants everyone to know this.” –  Clinton Brown Missionary Journal
  • “That sacred appearance, that vision-visitation in Palmyra, is the foundation on which the Restoration is built. It is the beginning of the revelation of God to humankind in these last days. Ours is a time foreseen by holy men and women for generations and centuries, a pivotal moment when righteousness would be sent down from heaven and truth would spring forth out of the earth.” I Saw a Pillar of Light, Robert L. Millet
  • “Later the Prophet said feelingly, but calmly and courageously, I am going like a lamb to the slaughter, but I am as calm as a summer’s morning. I have a conscience void of offense toward God and toward all men. If they take my life I shall die an innocent man, and my blood shall cry from the ground for vengeance, and it shall be said of me. He was murdered in cold blood.” Manual, Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Ezra Taft Benson, Chapter 7, Joseph Smith An Instrument in the Hands of the Lord, History of the Church, 6:555, .21
  • December 28, 1995 – Thursday – Quito Ecuador… “A lot of appointments dogged us today.  Satan was trying to deanimarnos (discourage us).  But he can’t. This morning we had Zone Study. Our Zone is sweet. We have a lot of fun together.  Elder Herrera and I walked all over the place today. We had 3 charlas. Yesterday we had 6. Yesterday, during the Joseph Smith principle at the Bustamante’s house, the Spirit was so strong. It was in  my whole body testifying that Joseph Smith is a true prophet. I have no doubt of that!!! We committed Marcelo Sifuentes and Mirian Zambrano to be baptized on the 7th of January. They’re neat people, and will be baptized. I love this work. At times I’m so tired, or want to give up, but no way. It’s like the 4th Quarter. Bear down and get ‘em. Before the mission I was worried because I had no excitement for the church. It was all Sports! I could get hyped up for Sports but not church. I prayed a lot during high school that the Lord would convert my excitement for Sports to excitement to Spread the Gospel. I tell you what, the Lord has answered my prayers. My adrenaline gets flowing to leave the house, hunt down the chosen, teach with the Spirit, and help people progress. I love it when the other team – Satan – tries to impede us or beat us. I get pumped to find out how to beat him.” – Clinton Brown Missionary Journal
  • “After many generations had walked the earth so many of them in conflict, hatred, darkness, and evil there arrived the great, new day of the Restoration. This glorious gospel was ushered in with the appearance of the Father and the Son to the boy Joseph. How truly remarkable was that vision in the year 1820 when Joseph prayed in the woods and there appeared before him both the Father and the Son. One of these spoke to him, calling him by name and, pointing to the other, said, This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him! (Joseph Smith History 1:17). Nothing like it had ever happened before. One is led to wonder why it was so important that both the Father and the Son appear. I think it was because They were ushering in the dispensation of the fulness of times, the last and final dispensation of the gospel, when there would be gathered together in one the elements of all previous dispensations. This was to be the final chapter in the long chronicle of God’s dealing with men and women upon the earth.” Manual, Teachings of the President of the Church: Gordon B Hinckley, Chapter 1, The Restoration of the Gospel the Dawning of a Brighter Day
  • “After this communication, I saw the light in the room begin to gather immediately around the person of him who had been speaking to me, and it continued to do so until the room was again left dark, except just around him; when, instantly I saw, as it were, a conduit open right up into heaven, and he ascended till he entirely disappeared, and the room was left as it had been before this heavenly light had made its appearance.” Book of Mormon, Joseph Smith
  • “A seer is one who sees. This does not mean that he sees through his natural eyes but rather through spiritual eyes. The seeric gift is a supernatural endowment. Joseph was like unto Moses, the ancient seer, and Moses saw God face to face, but he explains how he saw him in these words: But now mine own eyes have beheld God; but not my natural, but my spiritual eyes, for my natural eyes could not have beheld; for I should have withered and died in his presence; but his glory was upon me; and I beheld his face, for I was transfigured before him (Moses 1:11). We should not suppose that to see spiritually is not to see literally. Such vision is not fancy or imagination. The object is actually beheld but not with the natural eyes. Each of us has spiritual eyes which are the counterpart of our natural eyes. We were first created spiritually and then our bodies were created as the covering of our spirit. We are told that in our first estate we walked by sight. This was through the vision of our spiritual eyes because we had not yet been given bodies with natural eyes. All men have spiritual sight but are not always privileged to use such sight unless quickened by the Spirit of the Lord. By the power of the Holy Ghost, certain persons, sent to the earth for that purpose, are able to see and behold the things which pertain to God. A seer is one who sees and knows of things which are past, and also of things which are to come, and by them shall all things be revealed (see Mosiah 8:15). In short, he is one who sees, who walks in the light of the Lord with spiritual eyes open and quickened by the power of the Holy Ghost. Moses, Samuel, Isaiah, Ezekiel, and many others were seers, because they were privileged to have a nearer view of the divine glory and power than other mortals have.” Teachings of the President of the Church: Howard W Hunter, Chapter 5, Joseph Smith Prophet of the Restoration
