  • Alma 17: 1-4…1  And now it came to pass that as Alma was journeying from the land of Gideon southward, away to the land of Manti, behold, to his astonishment, he met with the sons of Mosiah journeying towards the land of Zarahemla.  2 Now these sons of Mosiah were with Alma at the time the angel first appeared unto him; therefore Alma did rejoice exceedingly to see his brethren; and what added more to his joy, they were still his brethren in the Lord; yea, and they had waxed strong in the knowledge of the truth; for they were men of a sound understanding and they had searched the scriptures diligently, that they might know the word of God.  3 But this is not all; they had given themselves to much prayer, and fasting; therefore they had the spirit of prophecy, and the spirit of revelation, and when they taught, they taught with power and authority of God. 4 And they had been teaching the word of God for the space of fourteen years among the Lamanites, having had much success in bringing many to the knowledge of the truth; yea, by the power of their words many were brought before the altar of God, to call on his name and confess their sins before him.

  • 3 Nephi 18: 21…  Pray in your families unto the Father, always in my name, that your wives and your children may be blessed.
  • “A pivotal spiritual attribute is that of self-mastery—the strength to place reason over appetite. Self-mastery builds a strong conscience. And your conscience determines your moral responses in difficult, tempting, and trying situations. Fasting helps your spirit to develop dominance over your physical appetites. Fasting also increases your access to heaven’s help, as it intensifies your prayers. Why the need for self-mastery? God implanted strong appetites within us for nourishment and love, vital for the human family to be perpetuated. When we master our appetites within the bounds of God’s laws, we can enjoy longer life, greater love, and consummate joy”   Russell M. Nelson, October 2013 General Conference
  • “We talk to God through prayer. He most often communicates back to us through His written word. To know what the voice of the Divine sounds and feels like, read His words, study the scriptures, and ponder them. Make them an integral part of everyday life. If you want your children to recognize, understand, and act on the promptings of the Spirit, you must study the scriptures with them.”  Richard G. Scott, October 2014 General Conference
  • “Choose to converse with your Father in Heaven often. Make time every day to share your thoughts and feelings with Him. Tell Him everything that concerns you. He is interested in the most important as well as the most mundane facets of your life. Share with Him your full range of feelings and experiences.Because He respects your agency, Father in Heaven will never force you to pray to Him. But as you exercise that agency and include Him in every aspect of your daily life, your heart will begin to fill with peace, buoyant peace. That peace will focus an eternal light on your struggles. It will help you to manage those challenges from an eternal perspective.”  Richard G. Scott, October 2014 General Conference
  • “Parents, help safeguard your children by arming them morning and night with the power of family prayer. Children are bombarded every day with the evils of lust, greed, pride, and a host of other sinful behaviors. Family prayer should be a non-negotiable priority in your daily life.”  Richard G. Scott, October 2014 General Conference

Do they see us reading them and marking them and clinging to them in daily life? Have our children ever unexpectedly opened a closed door and found us on our knees in prayer? Have they heard us not only pray with them but also pray for them out of nothing more than sheer parental love? Do our children know we believe in fasting as something more than an obligatory first-Sunday-of-the-month hardship? Do they know that we have fasted for them and for their future on days about which they knew nothing? Do they know we love being in the temple, not least because it provides a bond to them that neither death nor the legions of hell can break? Do they know we love and sustain local and general leaders, imperfect as they are, for their willingness to accept callings they did not seek in order to preserve a standard of righteousness they did not create? Do those children know that we love God with all our heart and that we long to see the face—and fall at the feet—of His Only Begotten Son? I pray that they know this.”  Broken Things to Mend (Jeffrey R. Holland) Kindle Loc. 193-201

  • “October 25th, 1994 – Tuesday.  Puyo Ecuador… I tell you what, my Dad is an incredible man.  He sent some of his journal entries from Puerto Rico.  What he wrote hit me hard.  He wrote that he has “Bound” the Lord to do what he asks.  My Dad is obeying all of the commandments and denying all chance of Satan to mess with him.  Because of this and extreme faith, he prays to God and asks for something.  With fasting and faith he knows he’s going to receive his answer.  He bound the Lord twice – to not have a war in Puerto Rico, and to let him be home by a certain Sunday!  And they both happened.  I need to analyze myself.  I need to obey all commandments so that the Lord will be bound.  If I could bind the Lord I could be a very successful missionary.  My Dad’s a great example.  I love my family.” – Clinton Brown Missionary Journal
  •  “October 27th, 1994 – Thursday.  Puyo Ecuador...Today we were teaching Wilson and there was a guy hammering.  When we were watching the 1st vision, it was close to the part of the vision and I knew it would touch him.  Also the people were getting rowdy.  So I said a prayer in my mind and said In the name of Jesus for this man to stop hammering and for everything to be peaceful for the Vision part.  5 seconds later the man stopped hammering, the baby stopped crying and everyone paid attention to the video & was touched.  Right after everything important was said in the video the noise started again.  I know the Lord answers prayers.  I realized a little bit that with faith and in the name of Jesus Christ I can do a lot of things.  I also did the same for the Miranda family the 1st time we taught them.  It was raining on their tin roof & we couldn’t hear the video.  I prayed & it stopped raining.  It started again after the video.  I know Joseph Smith was a prophet.  The Lord wants everyone to know this.” –  Clinton Brown Missionary Journal

  • 2 Nephi, Chapter 33: 4-5… And I know that the Lord God will consecrate my prayers for the gain of my people. And the words which I have written in weakness will be made strong unto them; for it persuadeth them to do good; it maketh known unto them of their fathers; and it speaketh of Jesus, and persuadeth them to believe in him, and to endure to the end, which is life eternal.  5 And it speaketh harshly against sin, according to the plainness of the truth; wherefore, no man will be angry at the words which I have written save he shall be of the spirit of the devil.
  • “Petitioning in prayer has taught me, again and again, that the vault of heaven with all its blessings is to be opened only by a combination lock. One tumbler falls when there is faith, a second when there is personal righteousness; the third and final tumbler falls only when what is sought is, in God’s judgment – not ours – right for us. Sometimes we pound on the vault door for something we want very much and wonder why the door does not open. We would be very spoiled children if that vault door opened any more easily than it does. I can tell, looking back, that God truly loves me by inventorying the petitions He has refused to grant me. Our rejected petitions tell us much about ourselves but also much about our flawless Father.”  (Neal A. Maxwell, New Era, Apr. 1978, 6)

If we would only be humble, if we would only be prayerful, if we would only live in such a way that each hour of our lives we could truthfully say, “Father in heaven, I am willing and anxious to do what thou wouldst have me do,” our lives every day would be enriched as we go through this earth experience.”  Teachings of Presidents of the Church: George Albert Smith, 2010, Page 14

  • “Lieutenant Nelson also learned something else: that foxholes invite serious introspection. One evening the M.A.S.H. unit where he was working came under attack. He and Dr. Simeone shared a foxhole for most the night. “Dr. Simeone, devout Catholic, and I, a devout Latter-Day saint, prayed unitedly in our foxhole that our lives might be preserved,” he recalled. Lieutenant Nelson later reflected later how much it meant to face life-threatening danger with a man of faith whose beliefs may have differed from his but looked to the same Source for comfort and strength. Their combined faith was a boon to both that stressful night,” Insights from a Prophet’s Life: Russell M. Nelson, Page 42

The stranded fellow shouted back, “No, it’s OK, I’m praying to God and he is going to save me.”. So the rowboat went on, Then a motorboat came by. “The fellin in the motorboat shouted,” Jump in, I can save you.”. To this, the stranded man said, “No thanks, I’m praying to God and he is going to save me. I have faith.”. So the motorboat went on. Then a helicopter came by and the pilot shouted down, “Grab this rope and I will lift you to safety.” To this the stranded man again replied. “No thanks, I’m praying to God and he is going to save me. I have faith.”. So the helicopter reluctantly flew away. Soon the water rose above the rooftop and the man drowned. He went to Heaven. He finally got his chance to discuss this whole situation with God, at which point he exclaimed, “I had faith in you but you didn’t save me, you let me drown. I don’t understand why!” To this God replied, “I sent you a rowboat and a motorboat and a helicopter, what more did you expect?” Anonymous

  • December 28, 1995 – Thursday – Quito Ecuador… “A lot of appointments dogged us today.  Satan was trying to deanimarnos (discourage us). But he can’t. This morning we had Zone Study. Our Zone is sweet. We have a lot of fun together.  Elder Herrera and I walked all over the place today. We had 3 charlas. Yesterday we had 6.  Yesterday, during the Joseph Smith principle at the Bustamante’s house, the Spirit was so strong. It was in my whole body testifying that Joseph Smith is a true prophet. I have no doubt of that!!! We committed Marcelo Sifuentes and Mirian Zambrano to be baptized on the 7th of January. They’re neat people, and will be baptized. I love this work. At times I’m so tired, or want to give up, but no way. It’s like the 4th Quarter. Bear down and get ‘em. Before the mission I was worried because I had no excitement for the church. It was all Sports! I could get hyped up for Sports but not church. I prayed a lot during high school that the Lord would convert my excitement for Sports to excitement to Spread the Gospel. I tell you what, the Lord has answered my prayers. My adrenaline gets flowing to leave the house, hunt down the chosen, teach with the Spirit, and help people progress. I love it when the other team – Satan – tries to impede us or beat us. I get pumped to find out how to beat him.” – Clinton Brown Missionary Journal

How truly remarkable was that vision in the year 1820 when Joseph prayed in the woods and there appeared before him both the Father and the Son. One of these spoke to him, calling him by name and, pointing to the other, said, This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him! (Joseph Smith History 1:17). Nothing like it had ever happened before. One is led to wonder why it was so important that both the Father and the Son appear. I think it was because They were ushering in the dispensation of the fulness of times, the last and final dispensation of the gospel, when there would be gathered together in one the elements of all previous dispensations. This was to be the final chapter in the long chronicle of God’s dealing with men and women upon the earth.” Manual, Teachings of the President of the Church: Gordon B Hinckley, Chapter 1, The Restoration of the Gospel the Dawning of a Brighter Day
  • April 6, 1996 – Saturday – Quito Ecuador…” On the bus ride home (and ever since then) my comp & I have been receiving a ton of ideas and revelation on our program.  We started a fast with the purpose of having all Stake Mission Presidencies established in this month.  Right now we’re getting so many ideas on how to do it.  The Lord answers prayers & fasts!!” – Clinton Brown Missionary Journal
  • “I submit that a return to the old pattern of prayer, family prayer in the homes of the people, is one of the basic medications that would check the dread disease that is eroding the character of our society. We could not expect a miracle in a day, but in a generation we would have a miracle.” Manual, Teachings of the President of the Church: Gordon B Hinkley, Chapter 6, How Mighty a Thing is Prayer
