  • “President Joseph F. Smith taught: “Men cannot forgive their own sins; they cannot cleanse themselves from the consequences of their sins. Men can stop sinning and can do right in the future, and so far [as] their acts are acceptable before the Lord [become] worthy of consideration. But who shall repair the wrongs they have done to themselves and to others, which it seems impossible for them to repair themselves? By the atonement of Jesus Christ the sins of the repentant shall be washed away; though they be crimson they shall be made white as wool [see Isaiah 1:18]. This is the promise given to you.” 2012 October General Conference, The Atonement, Sun. Morning Session – By Boyd K. Packer
  • “Shortly before President Heber J. Grant passed away, one of the Brethren visited his home. Before he left, President Grant prayed, “O God, bless me that I shall not lose my testimony and keep faithful to the end!” 1 After nearly 27 years as President of the Church, this was his fervent prayer. His example is a striking reminder that no one, at any age, is immune from Satan’s influence.” Kevin W. Pearson, April 2015 General Conference
  • Luke 15: 3 -7… 3 And he spake this parable unto them, saying, 4 What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it? 5 And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing. 6 And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost. 7 I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.
  • “While presiding over the Ukraine Kiev Mission, I once asked one of my most faithful sisters why she was always so hard on herself, why she was always beating herself up over the smallest things. Her answer was a classic example of someone listening to the wrong voice as she replied, “So no one can beat me to it.”Brothers and sisters, my counsel to this sister missionary is my counsel to you: acknowledge and face your weaknesses, but don’t be immobilized by them, because some of them will be your companions until you depart this earth life. No matter what your current status, the very moment you voluntarily choose honest, joyful, daily repentance by striving to simply do and be your very best, the Savior’s Atonement envelops and follows you, as it were, wherever you go. Living in this manner, you can truly “always retain a remission of your sins” ( Mosiah 4:12 ) every hour of every day, every second of every minute, and thus be fully clean and acceptable before God all the time”. Jörg Klebingat, October 2014 General Conference
  • “Become really, really good at repenting thoroughly and quickly. Because the Atonement of Jesus Christ is very practical, you should apply it generously 24/7, for it never runs out. Embrace the Atonement of Jesus Christ and repentance as things that are to be welcomed and applied daily according to the Great Physician’s orders. Establish an attitude of ongoing, happy, joyful repentance by making it your lifestyle of choice. In doing so, beware of the temptation to procrastinate, and don’t expect the world to cheer you on. Keeping your eyes on the Savior, care more about what He thinks of you, and let the consequences follow. Spiritual confidence increases when you voluntarily and joyfully repent of sins, both small and great, in real time by applying the Atonement of Jesus Christ”. Jörg Klebingat, October 2014 General Conference
  • “In Nazareth, the narrow road, That tires the feet and steals the breath, Passes the place where once abode The Carpenter of Nazareth. And up and down the dusty way The village folk would often wend; And on the bench, beside Him, lay Their broken things for Him to mend. The maiden with the doll she broke, The woman with the broken chair, The man with broken plough, or yoke, Said, “Can you mend it, Carpenter?” And each received the thing he sought, In yoke, or plough, or chair, or doll; The broken thing which each had brought Returned again a perfect whole. So, up the hill the long years through, With heavy step and wistful eye, The burdened souls their way pursue, Uttering each the plaintive cry: “O Carpenter of Nazareth, This heart, that’s broken past repair, This life, that’s shattered nigh to death, Oh, can You mend them, Carpenter?” And by His kind and ready hand, His own sweet life is woven through Our broken lives, until they stand A New Creation—”all things new.” “The shattered [substance] of [the] heart, Desire, ambition, hope, and faith, Mould Thou into the perfect part, O, Carpenter of Nazareth!” Broken Things to Mend (Jeffrey R. It may not be pornography, but it may be arrogance or unkindness, impatience or vanity, or any number of other flaws we need to remedy. • “It is most natural and just that he who commits the wrong should pay the penalty—atone for his wrongdoing. Therefore, when Adam was the transgressor of the law, justice demanded that he, and none else, should answer for the sin and pay the penalty with his life. But Adam, in breaking the law, himself became subject to the curse, and being under the curse could not atone, or undo what he had done. Neither could his children, for they also were under the curse, and it required one who was not subject to the curse to atone for that original sin. Moreover, since we were all under the curse, we were also powerless to atone for our individual sins. It therefore became necessary for the Father to send his Only Begotten Son, who was free from sin, to atone for our sins as well as for Adam’s transgression, which justice demanded should be done. He accordingly offered himself a sacrifice for sins, and through his death upon the cross took upon himself both Adam’s transgression and our individual sins, thereby redeeming us from the fall, and from our sins, on condition of repentance.” Chapter 3: The Plan of Salvation, Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Joseph Fielding Smith, (2013), 58–71

  •  April 30th, 1995 – Sunday.  Quito Ecuador… “I just got finished thinking a bit. For a good while before I was a little scared inside because I wasn’t being as obedient as I know I should’ve been. I would think a lot of the scriptures, and how the men would always receive punishments or tough trials when they weren’t righteous. They would receive these things to be reminded of the Lord & to be humbled. I was always scared that something would happen to me to frighten me to repent, or humble me to repent. At times I even asked for an experience that would change my attitude, that would help me to drop a lot of my carnal desires & sins. Well, the Lord did answer me. Because Elder Norris told me that experience of Satan which helped to make a change for the better. But I still wasn’t even close. I still had an inner feeling and knowledge that I had to change even more. Well, I kind of put it in the back of my mind, justifying my little sins – I mean, I was spiritually strong enough – Right??  Yesterday, right when I saw that poor kid dead in the street, a song entered my head that said “Do you hear me?  I can feel you near me.  It’s the answer that I’ve been longing for.”  Seeing this boy woke me up.  It was the answer that I was needing. It hurts me to think that I didn’t have the common sense or strength enough to repent for myself. The Lord had to humble me through this experience. It’s sad for me to think that one of the reasons for this kid’s death was to help me to re-evaluate my life and repent of the picky things that in my mind weren’t too big of a deal.”

  • Matthew, Chapter 26: 69-75… ¶Now Peter sat without in the palace: and a damsel came unto him, saying, Thou also wast with Jesus of Galilee. 70 But he denied before them all, saying, I know not what thou sayest. 71 And when he was gone out into the porch, another maid saw him, and said unto them that were there, This fellow was also with Jesus of Nazareth. 72 And again he denied with an oath, I do not know the man. 73 And after a while came unto him they that stood by, and said to Peter, Surely thou also art one of them; for thy speech bewrayeth thee. 74 Then began he to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man. And many years pass away before he shall manifest himself in the flesh; wherefore, go to, thy faith hath made thee whole.
  • Jarom 1: 11-12… Wherefore, the prophets, and the priests, and the teachers, did labor diligently, exhorting with all long-suffering the people to diligence; teaching the law of Moses, and the intent for which it was given; persuading them to look forward unto the Messiah, and believe in him to come as though he already was. And after this manner did they teach them. 12 And it came to pass that by so doing they kept them from being destroyed upon the face of the land; for they did prick their hearts with the word, continually stirring them up unto repentance.

What I am suggesting and asking is that we turn from the negativism that so permeates our society and look for the remarkable good in the land and times in which we live, that we speak of one another’s virtues more than we speak of one another’s faults, that optimism replace pessimism. Let our faith replace our fears.” Manual, Teachings of the Presidents of the Church: Gordon B Hinkley, Chapter 3, Cultivating an Attitude of Happiness and  a Spirit of Optimism
  •  March 28, 1996 – Friday – Ambato Ecuador…”We then had a successful appointment with Angel Palma (Ward Mission Leader Miraflores Ward).  Man, we’d have a lot more success if all men were in their citas.  Well, we then left with Angel Palma and we were going up a steep, dirt slope.  We passed a gate going up & it started to shake, & I heard a deep growl.  I just figured it was another clueless dog, that was until the earth started shaking like crazy.  Man, we headed up that dirt slope as fast as possible.  I slipped a few times, and luckily there wasn’t a land slide.  We got up top and an electric wire sparked.  We calmed down a lady, and then the earthquake wasn’t as jerky.  It still rocked but not so violently.  We looked across the valley and there were landslides all over the other mountain.  Later on we found out that a 4 year old girl was buried alive in her house form a landslide.  We waited a bit longer, Angel headed back down to his house to see if all was OK.  During these moment’s God let’s us remember who’s in charge.  I need to be more obedient and obey God’s commands.  Tonight there was a pretty strong aftershock.  They say that the 1st one was 5.7 on the richter scale, and centered near the Cotopaxi Volcano.  Not too good!  I’m sure there’ll be more aftershocks.  Tonight the Sisters Gillespie and Reyes did a good training for the missionaries of Pradera.  The work is advancing and the Lord is doing His part.  Waking us up!” – Clinton Brown Missionary Journal
